Way to go trying for that super difficult shape of a circle! A circle is REALLY difficult without "assistance" of a drill...at least it is on the hard wheels. If you can maintain your shape coming off the hard wheels (disks), the soft wheels (or disks!) are a cake-walk because there's no oddity with regards maneuvering the cab to smooth the dome. Don't forget to put a bevel along the bottom edge of the girdle. It will get rid of those couple of chips. A bevel along the bottom is important in order to keep the cab from chipping when it's maneuvered into a wire-wrap, or bezel setting. I see the flat spots you're talking about along the top edge of the girdle. To me, it means the cab stayed in one spot too long. Now...please don't take anything above as "negative"...I think you're doing a fantastic job!! You've got the BIG things down...now it's just a matter of ALL the little things...which will come with time...and more cabs...so keep at it!

I really appreciate your input - no negativity taken at all - I really appreciate the feedback and guidance. I think I understand what you mean about beveling the bottom - just one angled grind all the way around? I will do that moving forward. My cab bottoms are usually not very pretty so I need to work on that too. I'm afraid of the girdle lol. I believe I need to spend more time at the 280 hard disk before moving onto the smoothing - I need to figure out a good way to get right up to the girdle line without going over/creating flat spots/misshaping the rock/adding deeper scratches - these are all things on my mind when working which I think causes me to overthink (which isn't a good thing in my head ha!). One day when I'm brave enough I'll post a video of what I'm doing on the disks so if there's maybe something I'm doing that's counterproductive ya'll can let me know .

Look at you go girl! Nice job rocknewb101. You're exactly right on the bottom bevel. I usually do it on the 220 hard wheel. Don't hang out there for too long and keep things moving, you don't need much. You'll be surprised how much better those side shots look with the chips eliminated.

Wow Peta rocknewb101That is a very nice cab. It looks perfectly round to me. I like the flattish dome. Your top girdle line is pretty distinct. You’ll gain muscle memory that will help with the top girdle wobbles. The bottom girdle just needs the chips cleaned up a little on your finest hard disc. I’ve always cabbed on wheels (my first cabber had SiC wheels), so I’m not much help with discs. You might be rocking back and forth past your top girdle a little on fine hard disc or even on 325 soft. The coarser sanding wheels can do more stock removal than you intend sometimes. Compared to my first cabs, yours looks very professional. Thanks for showing.

I wear my optivisors and get in real close (sucky eyes!) when I'm shaping because I just can't see otherwise. I hope to get back to the sapphire soon - I'm a little intimidated by it lol, but coming along.

I got mine at Menards...which is like a Home Depot. I can't stress how much this has made cabbing easier for me! I wouldn't want to try and cab with my optivisor on. I do wear it, but propped up while I'm cabbing and looking at the wheels and cab through the magnifying lamp. I will flip the optivisor down and look at the cab through the optivisor AND the magnifying lamp to check for scratches or flat spots. To answer your other question...I actually do my bottom bevel (yes...Gary confirmed it is what you said) when I'm doing my final shaping of the preform on the wheels...OR...I'll do the bevel when I've taken it off dop and I'm touching up the back.

Believe it or not I have two of these! But I don't put them real close to the disc - I use mainly to look for scratches (and use optivisors) and for the light. I'll try to move it really close and look through it instead. I just feel like the slanted disc doesn't allow the freedom of movement (and the visual) the cab king does, but maybe I'm just trying to justify spending the money lol...

When I worked on my slant cabber, I stood behind it...not in front of it. I felt being in front didn't give me any kind of angle to view how the cab was contacting the disk. When I stood BEHIND the unit, I was looking directly down at the top...and I'd work the rock around the 12:00 position. This allowed me to see the exact contact point between the cab and the disk. I'm not sure how you're working yours...

I'll have to take a pic of my set up, but I basically have the magnifying lamp to the left of the machine and I sit in front of it, really close and typically work on the right hand side of the disc - but it IS hard to get a good visual, hence the reason why I get down so close. Thanks for the tip - I'll give it a go.
