Sorry it's been so long. I spend more of my summer time trying to cut slabs and look for rocks rather than doing much cabbing. I've been having fun making some Instagram videos and made one for this cabochon. Not sure if I can embed it here, so here's the link. www.instagram.com/reel/CvI5_2HOc3N/?igshid=NjIwNzIyMDk2Mg==And here's a picture of the final product. As you can see in the video the surface has a few pits and a little druzy thingy but seems like it turned out good. I need a thinner groove bit to fit the 20guage wire. This one is a little thicker and leaves a noticable gap if you look closely. Send me a link if you know of one that fits 20 guage snugly...

I only have one bit for my Gryphette...and it's probably the same as yours. Nice looking finished product Alex! It's fun to see other people's techniques when working on the wheels. Mine's different than yours. Maybe I need to consider switching over to your technique...I think you get better results!

That's a beauty and the video was helpful. When I made a groove wrap (I've only done 1 or 2) I did the groove after the cab was done. Makes a whole lot more sense to do it early on.
Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the tip. Patty I also used to make the groove at the end but ended up destroying a few good cabs by chipping or chunks falling out of the side so I tried starting to make the groove ahead of time. Not sure if I'm set on it or not.

agatewhisperer Beautiful work! Rio Grande has a thinner groove cutter. I had to fit it with a brass bushing to get it to fit the Gryphon shaft. The Gryphon cutter is to the left.

Nice one.
Random thought, if I ever find a new type of lace agate and it’s all uniform, I’m going to call it rational lace, or sensible lace. The cousin to crazy lace.
