That looks very much like the "Fordite" I picked up awhile back. It was unbelievably soft!! Great "stop" on the dome height to get those patterns!!

WOW the patterns in that teardrop are way cool ! Did you have to do anything different for polishing that soft paint ??

Patty Just ran it through the wheels on my Kingsley cabber and used the polishing pad on the end. I did hit it with Zam before the pic but I really don't think that made any difference. It's soft and grinds really fast but polishes decently.

Thanks Patty. It was kind of a surprise when I started grinding the teardrop one. It's the wrinkly part that makes it look so cool.

Thanks rockbrain, good info to know & you did a NICE job of it at that ! Patty Thanks, Patty liveoak. I added a couple pics of the other sides. Those are absolutely beautiful Gary! I love the colors and the patterns! Thanks! ashley. It's kind of stunning when you first grind through the gray. What fun! You are tempting me to try it. . .your outcomes are spectacular. It's lots of fun. I've been tempted for a while and finally found a decent size piece for a reasonable price. Lately on one of the FB sites I frequent, someone has been offering "dragonskin Fordite. It's very bubbly. Might be drips, I'm not sure. Usually a bit of the surface is gone so you can see the patterns. It's pretty spectacular. I 'm not real big into man made material, but a little bit never hurt anyone!

Wow! That looks super rippled in the one view, but the other it's perfectly domed! What a cool optical illusion! Never heard of fordite -assuming it's a manmade material - off to google!

Wow! That looks super rippled in the one view, but the other it's perfectly domed! What a cool optical illusion! Never heard of fordite -assuming it's a manmade material - off to google! It's dried paint. The original is from the factories in Detroit. Years of build up of paint on racks and equipment and then baked over and over for years made a very hard and interesting material. Now paint and paint processes have changed. The original Fordite is quite expensive. There are different sources now but the paint is different and softer. I'll probably never get a chance to work with the real stuff because of the cost. There are also a lot of variations now, Jeepite, Corvetteite, etc. Surfite is becoming popular now to. By-product of surf board manufacturing with colored layers of fiberglass.

That's basically what google tells me too - how fascinating the patterns and colors are and what an amazing way to reuse material! Jeepite and Corvetteite make me chuckle. Wonder what a hyundaite might look like . Very interesting!

Just realizing that it's not an optical illusion? Is it truly rippled like that? How did you polish in the grooves? Or are my eyes really playing tricks on me? I'm so confused ha!

It's an illusion. That's why I included the side view because just looking at the top view I would swear the surface is rippled. The surface is a smooth dome. The colors are rippled underneat. It makes it really interesting trying to grind it smooth and even!

I have a little of the old Fordite out of the Hazelwood,MO plant from the 60's and 70's. The looks is different than this newer material. I like to call the new stuff Detroit agate. Most of it comes from parts plants because most of the body's are powder coated now a days. No over spray with that method as it all gets sucked up in the vents. You did a beautiful job on your cabs!! Well done that ripple is killer!!!

Nice work! Fordite has always been a really cool material in my eyes. Ive got a bit of the new material from Jeep, Ford, and Chevy...all of them are soft like everyone keeps saying. And then I have some of it from Kenworth trucks and that is a completely different type. Its A LOT harder than the stuff from the normal auto manufacturers. I wonder if the Kenworth material I have is a bit more similar to the type of paint that was used on the older original Fordite?? Ive also scraped some out of the paint booth at my work and I keep a piece at my desk, but the colors are fairly basic since theyre for industrial machinery.
