Can you hold that in a gloved hand and smack it with a hammer, almost like knapping? I think using a chisel will make more little shards than you want.

That sounds reasonable. I just smacked about 20 lbs of obsidian today at work. Put it in a low sided box and smack it with a small maul. Make sure to use ample cushioning and don’t overdo it with how long it is in for.

I was doing a cleanout on one of my 3 lb barrels and tried fitting this piece in there and it seems like it will be OK. I'm tumbling it now (as a whole piece) and will check it in a couple days, to see how it's going.

I was planning on putting it in a ziploc bag and smashing it that way! Instead I just threw it whole into the barrel with a bunch of ceramics and 220 grit and we'll see what happens!

I have a 1 pound beautiful piece of mahogany obsidian, that I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with. Next time you pull yours from the tumbler, take a quick picture please.

velodromed - I uploaded those pictures like I said I would. The chunk needs more time in the 220, but I’m happy with the progress so far!

Don’t see anything here… He edited the original post and put them up there. *Justin, I'm glad you're going to run them longer in the 220..it'll round off some of the sharp edges that are left. If you "think" you need more ceramic as cushion, you'll be right. I've run obsidian without enough cushioning and they banged into each other too much. At least that was my result with not enough.

Got it lol. Very nice! I agree with Jason, needs a little bit more rounding off. It’s looking very good though. Can’t wait to see the final polish!

Thanks! This is the only item in the barrel, other than a bunch of ceramics. I really want this to turn out well, and didn't want to risk tumbling with other rocks or pieces of obsidian. It's a bit inefficient, but I hope the final results make it worth it!!!

Thanks! This round of 220 will run until Friday. I'll inspect the rock then and see if I should do more at 220 grit, or move on to 500 AO... I'll post more photos so maybe you all can help with that decision...?

Hello! After 7 days at 220 I uploaded more photos to the original post. I'm going to let lt spend more time tumbling at 220, as there are some spots I would like to get cleaned up a little before polishing. Thank you for looking!

Indeed! I think that’s what I love about this hobby is watching these rocks transform over time. I haven’t ever photographed the process, so this will he nice for me to go back and reference in the future.
