It is a common practice to put magnets to suspected meteorites to see if they stick. This can erase the magnetic signature of meteorites scientists test for. It is recommended that you do not put magnets on suspected meteorites, and instead, cut a sample that is not being sent to a lab if still suspected and test that sample. Cutting the stone will also allow you to see features that can indicate a meteorite such as chondrules and iron-nickel flakes.
