Found this rock today in central Texas. The rock was found in an old driveway. Can anyone help me with the ID ? I have never seen one like this before around here. I cannot wait to slip this into my rock tumbler for a spin, clean, and shine.

My first intuition is chert or pet wood - I still have trouble telling the difference between the 2 especially with the coloration you have there.

I am not familiar with chert, but I have read that central Texas has lots of it. Maybe a good tumble and shine is what we need. If this is chert, I most definitely want to find more. I am very familiar with petrified wood, and petrified wood in this area. If this is indeed petrified wood, then it is not a common one from this area. Thank you for your time and message.

I find a ton of chert in the central Texas area, grays, blacks, tons of browns, and some creams, yellows and reds on occasion. Do you have some picks of the pet wood you collect up? I'd love to see it. I am starting to think some of the stuff I call chert may be pet wood, but I just don't know it

Of course, I can post some of my petrified wood. I will do it in a different thread.

texhex Chert is a form of crypto/micro crystalline quartz. Flint and Jasper are common forms of chert. The different minerals lend color to the common gray chert base. Iron oxides will give Jasper its typical red color and also yellows and blacks. Flint sparks because of the high iron content. I’ve found petrified wood that was siliconized, having many of the characteristics of agate/chert/Jasper. Your piece looks like basic chert that’s been heavily river tumbled, but is worth tumbling because I kind of see something interesting underneath. There are other colors in there, like red and mustard yellow and black perhaps. Could turn out interesting.
