I am just starting out in the rock cutting world. My brother gave me an old Star Diamond c-6. The saw uses oil, cabbing parts use water. I will be cutting primarily turquoise. I've gotten different opinions on whether it's a good idea to use oil with turquoise. Is it possible to change out the oil for water? Should I attempt to do this, or leave it with the oil? ""What would you do if you were me?"" Thanks in advance for any advice!

Great question. I don't have the technical experience to give you an answer...but I will say welcome to the forum from South Dakota!

Most folks use water in their saws when cutting turquoise. Nowadays probably over 90% of American turquoise has been "stabilized", or soaked in a plastic polymer. If you're cutting stabilized turquoise oil most likely won't penetrate it but you might want to use water anyways. You can add a wetting agent like Crystal Cut to make the water stick to the blade better but you could also get by without it. Oh, easy enough to just drain old oil and clean residue out and use water. I'm not familiar with your machine but you'll likely have to remove the blade to clean sump. If you do change to water you'll have to drain water after every use so the blade doesn't rust.
