My entry is spiderweb rhyolite. I believe it comes from eastern Oregon or the Oregon/Idaho border. It has some cracks in the center. you are correct. Heppner Oregon to be exact. Killer cab btw.

I finally got started with the Rochester Lapidary Society in early September. Other than my trip to Banff & Jasper, I've been attending all of the weekly workshops they hold. It's a very friendly and helpful bunch! I got off to a slow start slabbing since everyone had been saving up their material over summer and the saws were in high demand. But I've made some progress on my first project. I'm not proud of the results, but I was a bit rushed. I need to go back and make some touch-ups after having learned some lessons the hard way, but I wanted to make my first submission, so here's my first embarrassingly bad cab! We have some friends coming to town this weekend and I was perhaps a bit ambitious with my goals to have 3 spooky orange and black wire wrapped cabs for Halloween. I went with some tri-flow obsidian I got from Lapidary Central that's been tumbling beautifully. My original design was a bit too large, so I cut down on my three large preforms you see here in favor of a freehand coffin shape. I don't think I made things easy for my first time by faceting on the wheel. I lost quite a bit of time trying to make surfaces completely flat, and had to restart the process a bit because I couldn't get a good polish on the face. I gave up on that and started to very slightly dome the flat surfaces so I didn't lose any contact due to concavity, but I don't think I did a very good job here, nor did I have enough time to be diligent about it due to the brief workshop time. I aim to go back and fix this to see if that's a better idea. I'd love advice on how I could keep it looking like a coffin while getting a good polish! Trying to capture the cab as it's seen in person is a tough challenge! I was impressed with the cabbing skills before, and now I'm impressed with the photography skills too! This was difficult for me. I'm sharing one image that shows it in a bit more flattering light, and another that shows all the scratches that I cannot see in person. In the latter one, you can see the brighter white spots which appear as more of a haze in person. Not quite sure how to explain it. I didn't take pics of the drawn preforms, but I trust that everyone believes it was me who pulled off such an ugly feat. No need to substantiate it with evidence as I'll be in last place for quite a while! 😆

It’s now confirmed. I want to be buried in a obsidian coffin.

Way to dip your toes in the water iamchris!! "Faceting" on wheels is extremely difficult! Way to take that on too right out of the gate!

Nice take on the coffin!! I love the obsidian and have yet to make a successful obsidian cab. Soon i'll try again. It truly looks like a wood-grain coffin! Can't wait to see all entries for this one.

That's a very good first try. I'm loving the obsidian. The dopped ones in the first photo look like they'll be great. I haven't tried to cab obsidian yet either, I know it's not the easiest material to work with. Thanks for sharing your story, it's a good one.

All look good, nice job. iamchris flat top cabs, known here as cabojohns, are a challenge, and so is obsidian. I think you did well with a double difficult challenge.

Boy, the end of the month is closing in fast!! 😬 I’m not sure I’ll be able to find the time to get something done. Will look for an opening.🤞🤞The entries so far are fun. Hope to see more, last minute ones popping in as usual.

agatewhisperer maybe spiderman/spiderwoman? I think they call it jasper but it is really basinite, so a silicified gemmy basalt. Looks like you did well with it.

Yeah, I won't make it this month. Lots of work and unfinished projects and the weather is cooling enough that I better get-r-done. Also didn't find anything worthy of the theme.

I got lazy. I’ll admit it Hope you didn't go soft after setting the new wins-in-a-row record last year Speaking of which ... I'm wondering why rockbrain has gone suspiciously quiet... I still think he's coming for you with two wins in a row... just saying.
