I can't wait to see the finished ring. I should give it a try too. Marvelous project.

Rockoonz If one wants to call the sloped area from the bottom edge part way up toward the dome in certain cabs a "girdle facet," as in a faceted stone, or some other name to clearly distinguish it, I could agree with that. But I think to call the whole thing a "girdle" is somewhat confusing. I may be hopelessly old-school but I think that partial slope needs a different name. And I confess to personally calling it a girdle now and then, so I'm not consistent myself. "Go with the flow" I think it's called. Maybe Shipley, if he were writing his dictionary today, would do the same. If the OED can redefine "unique" to be not one of a kind, as they've recently done, anything's possible.

Maybe the newer version should be called a "stepped girdle"?

If it ain’t the back and it ain’t the dome . . . hmmm? There's a Southern expression, the "'tain't," that comes to mind, but that's not quite appropriate methinks.

Seems to me the edge of any cab is a/the girdle, whether it’s straight and perpendicular to the back, straight and sloped in a bit, or curved.
the part of a cut gem dividing the crown from the base and embraced by the setting
Does anyone have a sketch or a pic, side view, of this stepped girdle? I have no idea what the hell it looks like.

parfive it's the thin flat area between the dome and the bottom edge.

Ok, so it’s just a squared-edge girdle, a wire wrapper’s special. : )
Also surely the most common edge ever cut on RTH, or the planet for that matter.

Ask any opal cutter. or anyone who cuts mainly traansparent/translucent stpnes. I think Tela's image distorts my point a bit because it's truly square not angled for a bezel. In the case of her image I'd agree it's the girdle. But what about this style of cut? Would you call the whole angled area the girdle, or just the base (bottom) outline?

The whole thing’s the girdle. Clumsy and confused, maybe, but still just a girdle. As for the planet’s cab cutters, I think what I’ve seen at the East Coast Gem Show and a few others over the years outnumbers the opal biz. : )

There's a lapidary company in Indiana that refers to the bottom edge bevel as the "Bottpm Girdle" and the sloped (beveled) side as the "Main Girdle".

I'd say I disagree on both points. What I've seen in Idar-Oberstein and the Tucson show over many years, makes an impressive counter argument. Depends on where one looks,of course. Remember, this thread (if you bothered to read it) began with an isssue about girdles. At one point rockjunquie commented to the original poster: "Try to cut a cab without a girdle. It works better for that style." I know what she meant but I thought the point needed a little discussion. But you can believe what you want, no further argument from me.

I didn't mean to start anything.
I haven't been at it as long as y'all have. I am MOST familiar with the stepped girdle and that's what I learned to do. I figured that if the step girdle was the girdle then with out would be no girdle. It just made sense to me.

I knew that when I read it. It was nothing personal.

Well, you got your discussion. : ) Yep. And as I said at the outset: "I also know I'll probably lose the argument, at least in this forum."

That’s the cool things about humans. We can communicate semi-complex topics with others and still be understood as long as we all speak the same language. Even if we communicate through small, silly electronic devices that none of us understand.
