I dug out a big chunk of the green striped rhyolite from outside of Q, the stuff with the green and white swirls. This is the only large chunk I brought home and it appears to be solid. I don't see any cracks in it. What makes this so cool is that it has perfect swirls of not only green and white, but pink too. If this preform turns out, I may make it the first sphere I make when my machine is set up. I had to make some slabs because I didn't take enough off of the end the first cut. I imagine a sphere made from that would be fabulous.

Most of the time the stuff is really frangible. Almost every time I have ever cut the stuff it has split along the swirly lines. This is the most solid chunk that was probably on the entire mountain. The entire mountain is made of it. Anyone who is at Q while I am there can go there with me and see the spot and collect to your heart's desire. I think I an going to try to find some more large chunks that are solid.

Wow! What a beauty. Nice rock!
Am I seeing less than an octahedron? Fewer facets than typical?
I'm such a rookie that I would use a less valuable piece to try out a new sphere machine. My mistakes are legendary. Looks like premium material.
Good luck, and please post pics of your machine and your process for the sphere.
And 'Q' is Quartzite, AZ?
