With the 2023 slabbing season coming to a close, I thought I'd show off some of what I've been up to this fall. If you know the IDs of any of these let me know! All pictures shown wet in natural light. This first one is a random rock I bid on at our club picnic. I figured I couldn't go wrong for $2! There is just a hint of sagenite showing at the bottom. IMG_2662 by Shiny Objects, on Flickr I like this slab. Kind of a cross between plumes and dendrites. The white is opaque at normal 1/4 inch slab thickness, but is translucent at an edge that was only about 2mm thick. IMG_2661 by Shiny Objects, on Flickr This is probably my favorite slab of the season! Just a little end scrap about 3.5 inches tall that had enough thickness to get 4 slices. Showing 2 book matched slabs. Looks like a butterfly. Would love to know if this has a name! IMG_2682 by Shiny Objects, on Flickr This next one was kind of blah from the outside, but showed a nice pink area inside which you don't see too often IMG_2671 by Shiny Objects, on Flickr Another little end piece. Only about 3 inches tall but really colorful with some nice patterns. IMG_2669 by Shiny Objects, on Flickr A nice golden brown agate. Nothing too special, but I like banded agates! IMG_2667 by Shiny Objects, on Flickr These last 3 pics show a rock with a really intense purple color. Its more purple in reality. The camera didn't really capture it well. The brown areas are also solid, but the grey/white areas degrade to a gritty, crumbly mess as it gets closer to the edge of the slab. The last pic shows a slab that was left to drip dry for a couple of days. The white crumbly part turned a bright green! Really fun. I still haven’t finished my slab saw refurbish. Life got busy this year. I love the butterfly! 🦋

I'd say the butterfly is pet wood, and very beautiful too.

I suggest #2 is Medicine Bow dendritic agate from Wyoming, and the last three, my best effort, Burro Creek purple agate. I love it when you find a pretty nice piece for only $2. They're all very nice. Thanks for sharing.

I'd say the butterfly is pet wood, and very beautiful too. I was assuming it was some kind of picture jasper. But it is much more colorful than picture jaspers normally are. It just might be petrified wood

I'm going with pet wood, too. I had a slab that was that bright and I cut a picture stone. It's almost a shame to cut that up. What are you going to do with them?

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them. I like the pattern as a whole. If I tried cabbing them, I'd end up with a 2.5 or 3 inch tall cab because I wouldn't want to loose much of the pattern. After putting the 2 slices together like that for the picture, I think I might just flat lap them and mount them together somehow for display. I decided to use Google's image search on a pic of just 1 of the slabs, and all that came up were butterfly pictures! So I guess they are destined to be displayed as a pair!

Here's that scenic wood I mentioned. I thought I had in my notes where it was from.
