Hello everyone, I have been meaning to work on these three for a while and finally got around to doing them. There's a little to say about each of these cabs. 1. Pilbara jasper from Australia. The slab for this one was gifted to me and it was a little thin so I made it a doublet using a brecciated jasper. The Pilbara has some fractures.
2. Purple cow from McDermitt eastern Oregon. I thought I would do some practicing of making a round, I think it came out okay except for one flat spot on the edge where I was trying a little too hard to remove a few scratches. It's noticeable.
3. Owyhee jasper from eastern Oregon. Owyhee is normally very hard, 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale, but this one was unusually soft and easy to work on. It might not even be Owyhee, I don't know for sure. Notice the sharp edge on the girdle or bevel. It was a good stone to practice getting the girdle very defined.
4. A group photo Thank you for looking.

Nice work!! I love pilbara and yours is really nice. I don't see the fractures. I think pilbara is no longer collected.

Nice. I like the idea of the double/sided doublet. 👍 And the owyhee is particularly pretty.

Nice stones! The last one sure looks like Owyhee to me. Thanks. I was sure it was. I had other Owhyee that wasn't very hard too. Maybe from a location about 50 feet from the harder variety or something.

Nice. I like the idea of the double/sided doublet. 👍 And the owyhee is particularly pretty. Thanks, The Owhyee was much softer than the usual stuff and didn't take the high polish, but I'm going to try other ways and see what happens. I'm going to be trying to make a lot of doublets in the near future. I hope to get pretty good at them.

It is no small feat for me to finish three in a weekend. Sometimes one can take me over a couple hours. There's a thread in this section somewhere about how long does it take to make a cab. It's a heck of a lot easier when the stone is on the soft side and takes less grinding. My machine is the Kingsley North 6". Do you have cab photos posted?

Thank you Patty, the white lines or streaks are not cracks, it's solid through and through. I didn't have to use the 80 grit wheel for any grinding it was so soft.

I don't think harder stones require much more time, just more aggressive grinding. I probably spend more time on softer material because I have to be more careful to not remove too much material

The first one I completed is nice to me, but maybe not amazing to you. I can send you the photos/video I have of my first one. I do not want to get smashed by the public.
