Can I mix plastic and ceramic together in a rotary tumbler?

TuesdayMaeDon’t move the plastic pellets from one stage to the next or you risk grit transfer. I think it’s ok with ceramic but I’m not sure.

Have read that Ceramics can be moved along in all of the stages as it gets washed thoroughly along with the rocks and does not get grit imbedded in it the way pellets do.

Another advantage of using ceramics rather than pellets is that they don't float and are MUCH easier to separate when it is "clean out time" !
I have used both and much prefer ceramics.
PLUS you cannot use pellets in a vibe !

And they don't produce microplastic waste.

Nice thing about plastics is the do float! Clean up is easy if you dump everything in a bucket, give it a stir and "skim" off the plastics. I dry them out on a paper towel and reuse them. Some of my plastics are getting on to about 20 years old!

Some of my plastics are getting on to about 20 years old! I used the pellets when I was using the tumbler for all stages. I was doing it outside with a hose and colander. I found it messy and difficult because they were hard (for me) to corral for removal. Having to have separate sets for each stage complicated life. Am now using Tumble with no "filler" for stage one and vibe with ceramics for the rest. It's a matter of what works best for each person. I have tried both and much prefer ceramics, mostly because they move along with the batch of rocks.

So true. I have an indoor shop and use the bucket method. I much prefer plastics in a rotary, but use ceramics in the vibe (plastics suck in the vibe for sure).
