Hi, I have 2 diamond flat lap disc I use a lot. A 80 grit and a 100 grit. I use them to shape stones I tumble. Both of them have become way too smooth, not aggressive a all.
Do you know of any way I can bring them back to cutting aggressively?
I have Googled this forum and Goog general with no luck. Some suggest an aluminum oxide stick. Problem is alum oxide is not as hard as the steel the diamonds are imbedded in so it doesn’t raise the diamonds.
Thank you.

I don't have a flat lap so just throwing @!$@ out. I was just wondering if you can tell if there are diamonds left in the disc? On a saw, the diamonds can get covered over by the steel and you can use a dressing stick or other method to reveal the diamonds. Wondering if that is what happened? Someone will know.

Aluminium Oxide is a lot harder than steel (9 vs around 4 to 5) But what you are trying to do is break the rounded off edges of the diamond. There are a lot of different methods, but the one I have used is to carefully use the corner of a squared off agate. Run it across the face with light even pressure (i tend to not use water just to drive a little heat into the plate) I do this 2 or 3 times.

Welcome to forum cam from South Dakota! I've ordered these and have had no issues with shipping. You want to talk about AGGRESSIVE! I've gotten the 60 grit, and it chews through material fast as all get out! www.ebay.com/itm/123878537883EDIT: To answer you actual question...sometimes disks can't be brought back to life. That's why I opted to get one of these inexpensive replacement disks.

With an ordinary grinding wheel you can reverse the wheel to get a bit of extra mileage, you would need to reverse rotation to do the same with a flat lap though, I would go with Jasons suggestion and get a new one.

I without a saw to preform, so there is lots of grinding if I got that direction. Slow rolling right now...
This is the condition of my current disc, I can't remember if it was 60 or 80. Either way, does it look like it still has meat on it, or am I well past due?

Well...when I ordered that 60 I mentioned, I didn't know 3 days later I was going to order my cabbing machine...so it has had only a couple uses after I got it...so I can't speak for that particular disk's longevity. However, when I first got going, I was using the original 80 grit for over a year...and it was well past the time I should have ordered a new one. I was grinding on domes for 45 minutes sometimes. I didn't know it shouldn't take that long! LOL Spending $20(ish) on a new disk is totally worth the time saved on grinding!

Is there a reason you don't want a saw? They're pretty cheap used and I feel like the time saved would eventually pay for itself. Or a used two wheel grinder with an aggressive textured wheel can grind stuff away almost as fast as you could saw it off. I'm open to suggestions like this, maybe I haven't thought too far outside the box yet.
I had a small tile saw where I could cut 3 inch rocks, but I don't have it nor the setup.
Space and elimination of waste and spray are my limitations.
