Greetings everyone! I have been storing small-batches of tumbling rough in old cardboard shoe boxes on shelves in my garage. It’s just what I had on hand here in the house. Over time, the boxes don’t hold up well. I’ve considered getting some of the inexpensive plastic shoe boxes as an alternative for storage…thinking they will hold up better. But before I do that, I just thought I’d ask what you use? I’m talking about small 3 to 5 lb lots of stone. Thank you in advance for your comments.

I use mostly Medium flat rate boxes from the post office. For smaller lots (5 lbs and under) I use heavy duty zip lock bags (we throw away hundreds a week at work, so I repurpose them). I used to use some plastic tubs, but they did not hold up as well as I hoped. They tended to crack and split after about a year.

I also use 1-gallon food storage bags. They have that white patch where you can label what the rough is or where you found it. They’re pretty easy to organize for me on top of an old desk I have downstairs.

I agree with jasoninsd. I store the tumbling material mostly in gallon freezer bags, some in quart bags or whatever other plastic bag I can scrounge up. That way it is easy to mark with a sharpie where and when they were found.

Most of my rough is stored outside (uv light is a concern for all plastic bags and many of the containers mentioned so far). I use the black plastic uv resistant tubs that nursery plants come in. They drain, they resist uv degradation, and come in a variety of sizes. I do throw a cloth or paper towel in the bottom to reduce spillage if small material is likely to be stored. Inside the shop I use everything from cigar boxes to dollar store bins.
