I've been running my DP 75lb rotary and noticed some barrel bloat and noises from one of the three 25lb barrels. I stopped it and opened it up. To my surprise a bunch of thick goo was on the inside of the lid and some rocks dropped. Weird for these because they have a nice separate liner to them. To my amazement the liner looks like it was slashed with a box cutter. My first thought was dry rot but it's too clean of a slice and it doesn't show cracking or dryness. Then it hit me, it has to be my softer rocks inside and had to have been a piece of obsidian. I mean what??! I've never had this happen. I did have 30f grit inside and neither of the two other barrels (running agates and jaspers) had the slash.
The rock snot was thick and rocks well rounded for just under 2 weeks running non-stop.

'Rock snot' cracked me up! Did you see that the obsidian broke up into sharp smaller pieces?

'Rock snot' cracked me up! Did you see that the obsidian broke up into sharp smaller pieces? I don't think it was obsidian honestly. I picked off a "larger" piece off the top and it was an agate. I mean this is a 4-5 inch gash. Rocks and rock snot was between the rubber lid liner/gastek at the barrel lid. Got a 1/8" sheet of rubber coming to make some new ones. Still just super wild to me. 😆 |

Obsidian would EASILY slice open a barrel liner. I mean good enough to process a wooly mammoth good enough for a simple rubber liner lol I always worry about the liner on my Model B.
