We have a tie vote in the main contest thread and so instead of deleting the epic poll and entering a new one I decided to create this new thread. For the re-vote I decided to deviate from the published contest "one day" rule and gave this re-vote poll five full days because with the sporadic nature forum visitation I don't think one day is really fair to either contestant. I did this last time we had a tie and nobody yelled at me so there Going forward this time I will remember to change the wording November 2023 RTH Cabochon Contest Contest Theme: Purple! chosen by our August and September winner rockbrain. Contestants are asked to create a cabochon of any material that contains any variation of the color purple.

Voting Criteria:Please judge each entry based on the following while keeping in mind that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the difficulty levels of material vary as do photography skills and equipment. An exceptional example of creativity and skill might not always be flashy and bright, and we owe it to every participant to do our best not to allow it to become a photography contest. 1) How well was the theme challenge of the contest theme met? 2) How well did the shape of the stone meet the general contest requirements, or any special theme-based shape requirements? 3) General appearance, beauty, artistic creativity. 4) Photography - is there a direct and focused front shot and a direct and focused side shot for voting purposes? If a tie vote occurs, a new voting poll will be launched for the period of at least five days and will include only the stones that were tied for the lead.

Wouldn’t hurt to post a definitive closing time on all these contests. In this case, five days gives ya
Midnight Pacific time on Thursday the 14th.
Letting the vote drag on looks tacky and ditto for vote swapping at the end.

Letting the vote drag on looks tacky and ditto for vote swapping at the end. Thank you for the input, I do appreciate it. I know I don't always get the contests reset and started by the first day of the month so for slight pressure relief I leave things slightly undefined *BUT* I 100% disagree with the dragging-on and looking tacky comment for the simple reason that there is every month a very clearly defined closing time on every contest and every voting period. In this context I can't even imagine what you mean by dragging on and looking tacky. No disrespect to the previous contest manager but dragging on is literally what we used to have with the contest having devolved into very late starts (if it started at all) and month long voting periods. The lack of time/date management of the contest had become excruciating to watch and participate in and was killing the contest in my humble opinion. Implementing a well regimented contest starts/stops/votes system was of utmost priority when I took over I don't think leaving a few days of ambiguity in certain spots deviates from that goal. To your point about vote swapping I have stated it several times but there's nothing I can do about that due to the Proboards software allows it and there is no "lock in votes" feature available that I know of.

Well, from here, it looks like the vote opened on the 1st and ended on the 9th.
Whatever.

Contest was locked on the first. Voting was open early on the 2nd. Technically should have been locked then at end of day on the 8th. Instead it was the 9th. This is a “fun” contest being run by a single volunteer who presumably has a busy life just like the rest of us. Any number of life events could be happening on the exact day that the contest is supposed to end. Being a few hours or one day off is completely reasonable in my opinion given that this is someone volunteering their personal time to put these contest threads together. Hassling the people that are willing to do this in good faith, essentially over minor human imperfections, only discourages everyone from wanting to volunteer for anything and casts a shadow over the contest thread that it’s done in. I find this ridiculous. If anyone has real concerns that some timeline isn’t being met down to the minute, how about a simple benefit of the doubt message asking how the volunteer is doing and whether they’ll have time to lock the thread on a particular date, rather than hassling them after the fact about how they aren’t doing this volunteer job perfectly.

Tommy thank you for doing the contests, if I recall I stepped in with a few cut and paste contest starts when our previous manager had life get in the way, as I recall he was a very busy person and stuff fell off the plate at times. Just doing that small task can be pretty time consuming.

If nothing else it will remind me to pay a bit more attention to consistency when I set polls to close and the contest will be even better for it. Sometimes I literally can't recall if I stop them on the 9th at 12:00am or the 9th at 11:59pm.

Well said, and thanks for the support.

At your service, Tommy. If the playoff goes extra innings, I’ll call Brad down at the homeless shelter and round up a few more vowts.

Parfive, if you live in Austin you should have about 5500+ that qualify to vote!

Bump’s already lost in the wilderness, Robin, but the vote still shows at the top o' every board, including all seven in Rock Sciences. : )

Still waiting on some Maury cabs 😉. I hand picked those right off the mountain side, just for you 😂 I know!! They are next on my list. I've not really been doing much at all in the way of lapidary -am struggling to get into it after my vacation and getting ready for the holidays. I'm off beginning 5pm today through the New Year so I'm really hoping to be able to sit down and start working again.
