Hello,
I have scanned the forums and cannot seem to find info on coolant ratio for a lapidary saw in which I am using water as the primary liquid and adding coolant to the water. I purchased the coolant from HiTech when I purchased my saw, but it seems like using mineral oil would be a more cost effective option. (I did read the posts on types of oils.) Is using mineral oil(USB) as an additive a good option, and if so, what would be the ratio of oil to add to water?
Thanks for any info, this forum is so incredibly helpful for someone new to this craft!

If you can cut with all mineral oil, do so. Blades will last longer. If you cut with water use what you bought. When you need more Diamond Pacific water aid is my choice.

How big is your HiTech saw? Personally I use oil for 10" slab saws and larger, and water with or without an additive for trim saws, even 10" ones. My Johnson Bros additive is a 10:1 ratio but some take less. I plan to switch to DP or Smokeys EZ cut once mine runs out, the JB stuff had been foaming, I assume due to a change of ingredients or reaction to the less acidic AZ water. My 4" tiny trim gets straight water, which I remove after use to prevent rust in the thin cheap blades I get for it.

If that coolant you bought from Hi Tech is in an 8oz bottle, you mix it with water, ten parts water to one part lube, most likely.
No one mixes mineral oil with water.

Yeah, water and oil become a nasty foamy mess, when my saw shop had a leaky roof I had to deal with it and no fun at all.

Thanks all! I see, I thought you could add the mineral oil to the water as the coolant(obviously) and that now appears to be a terrible idea! If I should choose to continue to use water instead of oil as the liquid, what other coolant could I use as an additive to water? I am thinking the one from hi-tech that is indeed in the 8 oz bottle could be purchased more cost-effectively if I knew what it was, and could buy it in a larger amount.
I do have the 10 inch saw.

I add a little borax to my water. Thats it. I also clean and dry everything once I'm done cutting so as to not have rusting issues.

Maxie, I use mineral oil in my 14" saw with good results. It is non-toxic to the skin and cleans easily with water. You should not breathe the mist because of potential lung damage especially when using the trim saw. I use Ultra Cruz based on ease of purchase.
