If you don’t have a full enough load and have to store and save up for the next stage (2,3,4,polish) and you can’t let it dry I’m guessing you have to store wet? Water? Mineral oil? Does water type matter, distilled, soft, hard etc. Could you run through a borax stage and store dry then? I saw on several Michigan Rocks videos where he talks abt saving for next stage and he runs his hands through dry rock. So I’m just confused and needing some clarification.

If you wash them good you should be able to store them dry with no problems. A Borax cycle would do the trick in my opinion.

Ditto.
You only need to keep them wet until you have all the mud washed off. If they dry with mud on them, it’s harder to get it off.

Keep in mind that Rob is a perfectioinist when it comes to passing the rocks along to the next stage. So he eliminates all cracks and holes before moving a rock beyound 80 grit. If you don't have any places for girt to hide, it is probably ok to store dry. I don't usually get that picky so I usually store mine in water, hoping if there is any grit in the cracks or holes, that it will get out early in the next stage and not mess a run up too much.

I don't tumble much any more. When I did, wash over 1/4" screen sitting on a wheelbarrow to get mud/grit off. wash good with spray and drip dry for a min more or less then dump in a 5 cal bucket. Fines/mud from coarse or medium grit I add more water from hose and let it set a min for grit to settle out then pour off muddy water. then if there is grit pour into a 5 gal bucket and add more water to increase rotation motion in bucket. decant remaining mud and recover remaining grit. 220 grit is hard to recover and anything finer is all lost.

I store them dry all the time. No issues, just make sure they are clean.

Get yourself a Textile Spot Cleaning Gun and use that to clean any holes you have in your rocks between stages. Then store dry if you want. It will only hurt a little if you hit your fingers instead of the rock. (I use cloth gloves in oversized leather gloves, and it doesn't hurt at all).
Best part is, you can also use it to clean your clothes, especially if rock sludge gets on them and gets stuck in a bit.
