My New Year's project on expanding-drums (after rebuilding bits of an old Bishop machine this year) It's a business card holder for a new co-worker starting tomorrow (hence the last-minute project in the cold workshop.)
It's coming along okay, but would appreciate input if you've got it. It's my first expanding-drum project, and my belts only go to 600. How would you knowledgeable folks finish this off? I have 14K diamond paste, 50K cerium powder, and the lower-grit wheels of a cab king as options. (But it's a 6 inch cab king, so not sure I could really work this around on those wheels without touching neighbor-wheels.) I also have a vibratory tumbler, but this may be too big for it, and I also need to finish it by tomorrow, so not sure if there'd be time to take that approach.
Anyway - definitely pretty pleased with the stone, and excited for more drum projects in 2024!

Since time is of the essence I would buy Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic for the project. You didn't ask but I would also finish the base with felt and clean the card slot for a professional look.

I don't know the size of the piece, but it looks like the Cab king would handle it. Work the piece vertically instead of horizontally.

Hope you’ve got a plan figured out by now. I don’t have an expanding wheel so I’d probably be trying to get a decent polish using the cab king. Not ideal but it’s probably not going to be scrutinized closely and a good enough polish can be gotten even on a large item on a 6” wheel. Nice of you to be spending your day on this gift. Sounds like the kind of last minute thing I’d get myself into as well!🤓

How much trouble would it be to swap the Cab King wheels? Go through 600 on your expanding wheel. Exchange the 1200 and the 3000 on the CK so the 1200 is on the outside and work the surface and rotate your piece with the excess always hanging off the right side of the wheel. Then swap the wheels back and repeat with the 3000.
