The recent thread by velodromed on chert and fossils reminded me of a rock I found recently in Missouri. It looks like chert. At first I thought the pattern shown in the photo was banding. But then I noticed that the lines make a spiral, not concentric circles. You can't see it in the photo but the line appears to come out on the side of the rock. Only thing I could think of was a worm track that got fossilized. Any other ideas on what could have created this? Chris

Hard to tell for sure, without holding it, but I find quite a bit of chert very similar to that here in Texas.

It was hard to follow at first until my eyes adjusted, and then suddenly it looked like a rose. I’ll be looking at my collection of bandage chert to see if any of them spiral like that, because it is interesting. When I first looked at your post I couldn’t tell, but at that time I didn’t sit and force my eyes to see the spiral. It just looked like circles to me so I dismissed it. Thats rather a good lesson to always look at things carefully and more than once.
