Looks interesting! I'm not really sure what it is supposed to be used for, but it might work as a vibe lap. As you mentioned you'd definitely need a plate of some sort. Also need to close off the opening on the side while running so everything doesnt just spill out. Not sure what kind of vibrating it does. If it is just up and down, it might not be all that effective. Lapidary laps have some vertical movement to keep the pieces moving around so they keep encountering new grit instead of just saying in place and just grinding what's below them away while unused grit is all around the pieces. Some unused grit would make it's way under the pieces from the vibrations, but not as effectively as when the pieces are moving

I think ceramic tile is going to be way to soft.
