I was given a large quantity of 400 silicon carbide. I usually rotary tumble all material for 1 to 2 weeks with 80 and then use a Lot O for 220, 600, 1000, and polish. I was wondering if I could use the 400 instead of the 600 and just let it run for 2-3 days. I have read that grit breaks down fairly quickly. I could experiment but appreciate any thoughts before I start. Thanks

The 400 grit should replace 600. As you said, let it run longer.

I will let silicon carbide go for days in my vibe rather than change it out every day or two with a finer grit, and it works great. I’ve even done it with 200 range grit. I let it go for four days, then I tried another batch where I ran it for two days, then swapped it out for 500 for two more days. I got the same basic result, so that’s my normal process now. I also do it with AO, taking 1200 AO and then letting it run for several days, kind of like a mega pre-polish. Then I run micron AO for two days and the rocks come out beautiful.
