Sorry been awhile I got some crushed glass from a local rock shop, red, yellow and orange. I started tumbling it and it keeps popping the top off my barrel. I searched tumbling glass in the forum before I came here to ask and unless I didn't search far enough I didn't see anything. My problem, It keeps popping the top off. Is there anything I can do to prevent this or should I just hang it up. Thanks in advance

Hi Kelly, I know glass produces gas and causing lids to pop. The only thing I can suggest is every 4 hours or so crack the lid open to let the gas out. Other than that, maybe more water than usual. There's a few threads about adding baking soda, baking soda or not? Jamesp did recommend using it but others say it does just the opposite, creates more gas.

What type of tumbler are you using? I recently threw some glass in with some stones in my Lot-O 220-finish. It actually turned out really good. If I was going to try it I'd do 50/50 glass and ceramic in the vibe to start and adjust my methods from there based on results.

Thanks Doug. Thinking about extra washers between top and cover and zip ties to hold cover on. What's 1 more mess if it doesn't work.

Had it originally in a 1.5# barrel with 120/220, then put it in a 3# after the first pop, then in the 6# after it popped again, never increasing the amt of glass, (I figured it was going to be the death of me) now thinking of keeping it in the 6# but using zip ties to hold the cover on and washers between the top and the cover. Probably create a pressure cooker.

Oh yeah that's right Jason. Maybe I'll find more than 1 then. At that rate I could have 24 in 8 hours. I was declined for the position. Your fairburns are safe for now.

After reading some of JamesP's threads, glass can produce tons of gas. His rubber caps would be bulging out and shoot off when he loosened them.

You can get some action going in a vibe. Wouldn't have to worry about gas build up. May need to recharge a couple times but no biggy there.

I haven’t tumbled in years but we used to use Gas-X to reduce the pressure build up.

Is glass any harder on a barrel than rocks are ?
Should it be rotaried first before being put in the vibe ? If so ... how long a run would be recommended ?
I have a stash of potential faux beach glass awaiting processing but am reluctant to risk the good barrels. I did some in those little plastic kid tumblers but they are sooooooo loud that they are really unusable except in the summer when they can be run out in an outbuilding and out of earshot. AND they don't hold very much.
I tried the youtube suggestion of using a small cement mixer BUT it was too messy and cumbersome to clean and the results were less than stellar.
