So, I have this problem. I like to collect stuff and my wife and friends make comments and they use words like obsession, lunatic, compulsive, hoarder, weirdo.
The latest episode started last summer when I was spending days sorting and loading some of my rock inventory into steel drums and a flock of magpies landed nearby and started eying my grape vines. I admired their iridescent feathers while they were thieving my grapes and it somehow got me thinking I probably had florescent rocks in my inventory and I ought to find my cheapo flashlight/blacklight and look them over when it got dark.
Later that night I lit up the rock piles with the light and I was shocked to see that I had more florescent rocks than I thought. It inspired me to get a real UV light and take a more serious look. A couple weeks later I got my light and returned to the rocks in the dark. I was astounded at what I saw and within a few minutes I hatched a plan to fill an oak bookshelf with these beauties down in my basement at the end of a dark hallway. The idea was to be able to enjoy the light show by closing a couple of doors, flipping the light switch off and turning on the new UV light.
After a couple of nights hunting for my best specimens and lugging them into the basement in five gallon buckets I had a display far better than I thought I could muster. Now I'm thinking of more display shelves and more specimens while the wife is thinking of replacing me. It's getting out of control but I'm actually a good person.

Here's the cheap blacklight that started me on the path.

And here's the better quality UV light that sent me over the edge.

The current state of obsession in regular indoor lighting.

Fluorescent rocks are a mystery to me. I don’t collect them because we don’t live in a fluorescent world. When a friend mentions that a rock of mine is fluorescent, I hand it to them. Happily!
I’m happy. Friend happy. Rock happy!

Very cool, Randy! I picked up a few yooperlites a few months ago, as well as a similar UV flashlight. It's fun to see them come alive under the UV light.
Do you have any glowing coprolites in that collection?

Rubies glow like the embers of hell. The photo is barely adequate to portray the depth of glow.

WOW WOW WOW!! Great idea on that display Randy! I'll tell you Jason, it's more fun than shining the UV light around in a cheap motel room! You ought to see the delight of all the folks I've dragged down into the basement to see the display.

Fwiw, florescence usually just concerns flowers, which can also fluoresce, some even in visible light, apparently.
