Sands, great photos! Yes, it is Alexandrite. It is a stone I faceted and it weighs about 12cts. At 6500$ a ct, it is an impressive stone. I shook when I made it. It took me three full attempts to make. As I speak, and from what I have been told, and shown, I am the only person to be able to set a trillion faceted stone with wire without solder. On one large hand, Sands will be missed at the fleamarket. On the other hand, Sands is, by moving on, going to where his work will be seen for the art it is. At the market here, Sands is not really seen by people. It is season for us, and today, which is one of the busiest days in "season" the market was empty. I think, the only reason I am doing ok here, is I repair their jewelery. Except for one or two people, no one sees art in what either Sands, or I do. I watched the brilliance in the work Sands did, and I watched people just want something for nothing. Rather than customers, they were leaches sucking what tidbits Sands could offer. Somehow he kept up his chin. I have some cabs Sands made, and they are just not for sale! They are mine. He belong where they see art. Sands is indeed an artist. Great photos.

Awesome ring, Doc!!! So tell us, what are your plans for it?
You 2 guys are indeed Master Artists! It's a shame that people don't/can't appreciate what all goes into your creations. But we here appreciate all you do - always remember that!!!

So the alexandrite is 12 carrots, and alexandrite runs at $6,500.00 per carrot. And Doc was shaking as he was cutting the stone. Well, it looks like $78,000.00 for the stone if I'm not mistaken. Man, I would be shaking too with a stone worth that much! MrCoffee

"no one sees art in what either Sands, or I do" I had trouble seeing art at first Doc - infact - I said to a couple of my friends that I have to admit that I didnt know what "smooth" was. I thought smooth was the surface of a desk or a worn out gearstick or stearing wheel That of course is before I started rock tumbling. Back to the quote at the top there - I think thats kind of sad - but it applies all over the place in life. Sometimes I can write a total monster of a computer program - and no-one can see the art in it. There isnt anyone who understands that because I did it "this way" rather than "that way" it makes it kind of special. Or kind of like where I spent 20 hours thinking things through before I touched the keyboard and started programming - the 20 hours are mine and mine alone - nobody saw them and nobody knows what happened there, all they get is a screen full of stuff to key in and a report that works with their printer........... "no one sees art in what either Sands, or I do" Its sad for them - but they dont know they are missing out - which means its easy for them. A most profound thought - "You dont know what you dont know". Horrible that once you get to grips with it.

Doc, I think it doesnt matter so much if most people don't see Sands work for what it is, most people are sub~par, selfish and shallow, that being said I'm not suprised that they have no appreciation of his work. He has a family of people here that love him and his work. The only thing we should all give a hang about is what our loved ones think. If others find his or our work compelling then they should be considered part of the family. We don't want you or Sands to become the Coca~Cola of the rock world, at least I don't. That makes us rockhouds just that more close knit and special... I know wherever Sands goes he'll be admired, not just for his work but for his unique being. After all you can't get any more down to earth than when your hounding for rocks... JM .02 Marian

It is an damn shame that folks like Doc & Sands are not acknowledged for their beautiful art work by the general public. But they can take satisfaction from the knowledge that they ARE artists in the minds of those of us that appreciate their talent.
Most of the Old Masters were not know for their work during their productive years. But once no more paintings were being produced their talent was recognized and appreciated. And so it was for many of the great talents that today we call Masters. A shame, yes but it is a fact. Sands and Doc can take solace knowing that their work stands head and shoulders above what the so called artists of today generate. Their work speaks for itself and yes it literally shouts at the top of its voice "look at us, our art is the pinnacle of our knowledge, talent and efforts".
Congratulations Doc & Sands, you are respected and revered as both men and artists.
Pete

You can really see a change in attitudes from the '60's to today. Everyone wants something, and they do not seem to want to wait, and when they get it, it is like something they do not know what to do with. There are a few, however, who you can tell are speachless. Both Sands work, and mine to some, leaves them stunned. You can tell by the way they hold the stone and look into it. They make up for the rest. Jenne reads the Y-Ching. Confucious tells us the world has become an haven for pigs and fishes. All animals are equal, some are more equal than others. Ah, in a perfect world all would be well. In this world, it takes only one sincere individual to compensate for the load of all the rest. Of course here, in the land of the pickup trucks, pit bulls, and rednecks, unless it is beer it is useless. Then we get those gang wannabees. They walk up, speak in some language I do not think they understand and ask if it is real. I walk up to them and tell them no. I tell them it is an unique two dimensional representation of an abstract concept. Oh, is it real? I tell them that the truth is way below their intellectual threshold. They agree and walk like monkeys down the isle. Darwin, where are you when we need you? Margeret Mead, are you listening.... are you watching? WE are evolving. We are accepting the unacceptable and calling it ok. It has been a long day.

Doc to truely live (like you do!!!) you have to give it your all- You and Sands have given me more insriration than you will ever know- I was about to chuck the whole cabbing thing- Just gonna give up on it- Then I thought- What would doc and sands say???- well the answer came to me right away- they would say- Hey Stefan- think about what is going wrong- and fix it!!! So I did- I went back to the grinder- THought about HOW to polish- and what I was doing- what was wrong- and what was right- then I fired it up- and put stone to leather- Well my very first GLASS LIKE shine came about!!!!!! THank You Doc and Sands- you have taught me well!
