First Cabs_Q_March 2024 profile by Quentin Furrow, on Flickr I have to say I'm pretty thrilled with my first attempt at making cabachons. I didn't expect to have anything this nice at first. I was able to get lots of tips here and online, found some great templates, had good material to work with, bought the Kingsley North cabber with Nova wheels, and then I just took my time to make sure I had a good girdle and cut them carefully on the hard wheels before I finished shaping/polishing them. I think I'm hooked on making cabs now! Q

@roqhound - I just saw you on FB! I'll say it again - these are top notch. Not even just for your first, they are top notch all around! My first attempt was with the dremel on green opal and it was horrific haha! Well done -look forward to seeing more of your work.

For a first effort I'd say you have a talent for cabbing and you ought to push your horizons and see how far you can take the art. The pursuit of excellence is calling you.

I have to agree with everyone else. Nice shapes, capture, execution and shine. Even good photography to show them off. It looks like you have a scratch free Montana Agate which is no easy task! I'd have been proud to have ground any of those. Keep it up!

Quentin...I'm in absolute awe of your first attempts. As someone else stated, these would make a seasoned veteran ecstatic! *Edit - "Attempt" isn't the right word...rather it should say "Successes"!

You guys are all great! Thank all of you who have given me such great compliments. I really appreciate it, and it means a lot to me. I'm really excited that I'm jumping into this and I'm having a lot of fun thinking about how I plan to use all of these. I've pretty much marked up all the remaining slabs that I've had available, so it's time for me to go find a bunch more material and then make a lot more cabs so that I have a good assortment of shapes, sizes, and colors when I attempt to learn silversmithing and jewelry making. I'm just going to enjoy this part of the journey because I don't know how much I'll enjoy the next part. Even if I don't enjoy the silversmithing, cabbing is a blast, so I'll be doing more of it!
Thanks - Quentin

Thanks - Quentin I make cabs...and have "dabbled" in wire-wrapping. I still think my favorite aspect of the hobby is cabbing. There's something "soothing" about the cabbing process for me. Wire-wrapping makes me use a lot of brain-power...something I'm in short supply of most times! LOL
