I wasn't sure what page to put this on but here we go. I gathered some wood off the playground a few weeks ago. I picked chunks that could be mistaken for rocks, lots of knots and burles, and I chunked them in my tumber I added some play sand from the Mal*Wart, it was fairly damp I wasn't going to add any water so I thought it should be fine. I shook it down to get some headspace and tossed it in the rollers. Just to be on the safe side though, I grabbed an old pot and dried some of the sand over the fire next time we cooked out. It was not fine BTW Sand caked to the wood and the barrel And also formed these spheres I knocked as much of the caked on sand as I could off and tossed the wood and the sand balls back in, with dry sand I did a clean out but neglected to photograph that, it had reduced the sand to powder so on a lark I tossed in some 30SiC that I can't use for rocks in my 3lb barrels. It worked Okay-ish, I think the sand did better. I tossed them in with some water for a bout 10 minutes to rinse They are tumbling now with some pea-gravel but I will probably dry a larger volume of sand and go back to that, though probably with daily or bi-daily clean outs instead of weekly. Stay tuned...

Water does not hurt the wood. I have used hardwood scraps from projects as fill with some stones and the wood pieces came out pretty nice, kind of like small driftwood pieces. Of course still dull but would probably look extra nice if varnished after being dried again.

Of course still dull but would probably look extra nice if varnished after being dried again. my endgame involves some liquid stain/sealant/varnish/finish of some kind and a disposable drum(pickle jar probably) I was not too worried about the wood being harmed, I was more worried about the wood floating, unscathed, on the surface. or a repeat of the caking incident.

So tumbling in gravel seems to have done more harm to my barrel than to the wood. All the wood pieces were covered in black residue. I traded the gravel for sand and water, having lots of water should stop the sand from sticking to the wood.

The tumbled woods look cool. Definitely keep us updated how they polish
