My most memorable reads were the Dune books by Frank Herbert. One glorious summer, I read them all. I had seen the original movie by David Lynch and LOVED it. I have a special bond with those stories and they are close to my heart, so I was both dreading and looking forward to the new movies. You notice I didn't mention those horrible ones made for the sci fi channel. Could the casting have been worse?
Anyway, I saw the first new one at home and saw the second at an early matinee this morning. I really liked the first one even if it took a bit to get used to seeing new faces. I wasn't happy with Jason Mimoa, at all, as Duncan! And, if you put a blonde wig on young Paul he could have been my grandson, which was a little distracting. I think the new folks did a great job, overall. I liked their take on the worms. I think they were the best yet. They kept the Lynch feel as much as they could, or, at least, they gave him a nod. The second one was a bit long for my comfortability, (is that even a word??) but it didn't drag- it was well paced. But, almost 3 hours in a theater is a long time. I don't like going to the theater. I can't even remember the last time I went. But, this was a special occasion and, I think, it was worth it.
Did you see them?
(I avoided spoilers. You're welcome. )

I have seen the two new films and I think they are great. Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) might be my favorite director of recent films. His films look and sound amazing. Plus, he seems to be able to put together a great story (or variation on a story).
I struggle with the theater experience as well. People are just so annoying.

He did a great job with BR2024. Another I both dreaded and looked forward to. BR original is my favorite movie, so I was a bit hesitant, but I loved it.
I think 300 was the last movie I saw- at an empty matinee. Call me whatever you want- but stepping into a theater and smelling all those people is NOT my idea of fun. And, that's just the beginning. LOL!
ETA To clarify- Smelling all those perfumes, hair products, deodorants, fabric softeners and sweat gives me an instant headache. Too much!

I loved them both. I've seen the first one probably 5 times and I'll probably try and catch the second one again in the theaters.
Dune was one of first two books that really introduced me to sci-fi, it's had a special place for me since highschool. One of those books I'll reread on long trips.
There were some things that changed a little, but they are sticking to the core of the story, which can't be said for a lot of the projects these days (WHEEL OF TIME) for example.

Have you heard of the new Dune series? Dune: The Prophesy? It's coming out in the Fall. It's the back story of the Bene Gesserit. Can't wait!

I was a little disappointed about them leaving out the spacing guild when they were so integral to the power struggle. Not much on how they traveled, either.

I actually enjoyed the one with Sting, if for no other reason to see him die. Like Tom Cruise in edge of tomorrow was a special treat... All that nonsense dispensed with, have not seen Dune, yet. The critical drinker likes it, so I'm sure I will if ever I get around to it.

I brought a Dune bucket home before I saw the jokes from the social media I still think it is cool Lucky! I went on ebay to look and one guy is selling one for 800. I found one for 129 and almost bought. If it sat on a shelf, I might get it, but it's too big to display.

I definitely wasn't aware of its market value - one theatre use seems to have cost about 60 bucks I also saw some cute Dune sandworm mug on etsy but they are probably copyright infringement.
