Hello, I am new to tumbling. For my first batch I used Rock Shed grit that I ordered as a set (with grit for stages 1 through 4). The rocks turned out great. I discovered that the tumbling grit set from Kingsley North was a bit less expensive, so I am using that in my current rotary tumble. I moved a patch from stage 2 to 3 last might and I noticed that the Rock Shed stage 3 grit is 500 aluminum oxide and the Kingsley North stage 3 is 600 silicon carbide. I am wondering if I should plan on doing a pre polish with 1000 aluminum oxide before I move to the 8000 beacuse of this change in grit type. I did not prepolish with the Rock Shed grit, I moved from 500 (stage 3) right to polish with good results. I hope this makes sense. Any advice is appreciated.

Welcome from Virginia!
Not a tumbler, but I'm sure someone can help.

Welcome from Missouri. There has been a lot of discussion about 600 sic vs 500 ao on past threads on the forum. I mostly stopped using the 600 sic because it is so fine it sticks to everything. As far as the pre polish goes, I (not being the world's expert) would use the same pre-polish with either the 500 ao or 600 sic.
