I have a Lortone 3A and a UV-10 vibe with the minibowl, and just last week picked up a QT66 (for only $35!!!). I had been using the 3A for coarse grit only, and then finishing up in the vibe, but with the smaller capacity and the waaaaay longer grind time of the 3A it became a real bottleneck.
Now that I've got so much more capacity for the coarse stage, I'm thinking about deep-cleaning the 3A and using it as a dedicated polish barrel. I have a few questions about it though: 1) Does anyone have experience converting a used barrel into a "dedicated" polish barrel? Any tips? 2) Is it ridiculous to do the fine and pre-polish steps in a vibe, then go back to a rotary for polish?
(I don't have the money for a second vibe bowl, which would probably be better. On that note... any DIY Ultra-Vibe bowls out there?)
Thanks!

Good questions. 1) I have made a 3lb Lortone barrel into a polish barrel a few times with no problems. I would fill it with ceramic media and add ivory soap or Dawn and run it for a couple hours, check how dirty the water and suds are and repeat if necessary until the soapy water is clean as a whistle. 2) never thought of doing this, but it sounds like a neat idea. It's not ridiculous, but I like the vibe results. The bowls are about $100?

You can use a polish dedicated bowl if you want but to be honest, you really don't need to.
You would be more likely to cross contaminate from the rocks than the bowl. Just clean it out good. If you're still worried, run the rocks in the bowl with some soapy water a time or 2, rinse everything well and go to the next stage.

Vibes are usually used for polish stages because they produce an excellent shine (for less time), so a lot of people move away from using rotary tumblers in the later stages.
If you wanted to reduce the bottleneck in your process caused by running your coarse stage in the 3A and put all tumblers to work, maybe you could run your coarse in your larger rotary, move rocks on to the 3A for the medium grit stage, and use the vibe for the pre-polish and polish stages.

I have found with obsidian in particular and softer stones course grit rotary then 220 and 500 in the vibe (UV10) then dedicated polish rotary Thumlers AR12 with airsoft .20 gram plastic bb's 50/50ish ratio. Works great for me.
