Fletcher was a huge dog. According to his double dew claws and DNA test, he was a Great Pyrenees with a smidge of German Shepard. He tipped the scales at a healthy 120 lbs. He was my daughter's dog, but he was definitely part of the family. Pyrenees are guardian/watch dogs and can be formidable. One time, some scum bag broke into their house while they were sleeping. Bad move. Fletcher was hot on his tail!! Scared the crap out of the guy. But, Fletcher, being a good boy, stopped at the gate and didn't pursue him to chew his ass. The really scary part was the man was in the livingroom where my grandson was sleeping on the couch. Scary to think what might have happened had he woken up and Fletcher wasn't there. Fletcher got his name from a town in TX where he was rescued. My daughter has been working with dogs for 20+ years. One of those places was a sketchy rescue which she didn't stay long at. They had every manner of non rehabilitatable dogs. Vicious dogs. When Fletcher was brought in, she knew he didn't belong there, so she brought him home. He made himself part of the family. But, because of his breed, he could be sketchy around people he didn't like. He would low growl, rear up and get in their faces. Most of the time, it was easy to see why he didn't like them. He was very protective and territorial. He was fine with family, but he was a dog who needed a firm hand. He was better off with my daughter than most people. He was lucky to get her. With family he was a big ol baby. You wouldn't know by looking at him, but he was very lazy- content to lay around the house all day. They made him take walks, but they were short. He just didn't like them, though he was very well behaved.
Somehow he tore his ACL. The vet said he was too old for the surgery. Then they discovered he had some kind of mass behind one of his eyes. No one, including 3 vets after exhaustive tests, could determine if it was cancer. But, Fletcher went down hill very fast. Today, when I saw him, he wasn't able to move around, at all. He couldn't lift his head to drink. He wasn't eating. He was just laying there, peeing on himself. Yup, it was time for his last trip to the vet. They loaded him onto a large hammock to get him in the car. His body was lifeless and he didn't resist. He's in Puppy Heaven now and no longer in pain.
Here he is with my granddaughter doing what he loved best- curling up with family on his couch and getting all the lovin'. Thanks for reading along. In case you didn't figure it out- I'm pretty tore up about it.

I'm so sorry for your loss. A good becomes family really quick. Even with a full life, never seems like you had enough time with them.

Tela...my love and thoughts are going out to you and your family. There's several of us who have lost our four-legged family members lately.

Sorry to you and your family about Fletcher. Sounds like your daughter gave him a nice loving life, and he enjoyed it.

Thanks everyone. It was a sad day, but it had to be done. He was so miserable that they couldn't wait to have a vet come to the house- they were booked. Couldn't make him wait that long. My daughter is really tore up.

Very sorry to read this Tela! We had to have our 14 year old Chow Chow/mix put down early last month. It just seems cruel at times that dog's lifespans are so short.

Tela, I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your furry companion. It still bothers me when I think about loosing our Maggie this year.

At work we were sitting around a table at lunch and the discussion turned to therapy dogs and if they would be allowed in the building and into GMP environments. Our head of QA said absolutely not (😰) and I asked what kind of training therapy dogs went through, if any. He said something that really stuck with me. He said that ‘all dogs were therapy dogs’. It seems that Fletcher was that for your whole family.
I’m so sorry for your loss.

So sorry. I'm still grieving over two beloved dogs and 3 special cats who passed over that bridge many years ago. It's a special kind of loss. Sympathy to all involved.
