When I was out with Rob Jugglerguy last week looking for rocks in Petoskey, he told me about a location in the area where he had found some good Petoskey Stones. He indicated that they generally look terrible unpolished but about half of them polish nicely. See link below for one of his short videos on a stone that was found at this location. He also said he had sent some to another person and none of them polished well. Well of course I went there. Below is a picture of the 27 Petoskey Stones that I collected. I was trying to collect different looking ones (two or three of each "type") in the hope of being able to figure out what polishes and what doesn't. But when I put them out today, they all look different other than the bottom row which I found in one little pocket. Pretty sure the bottom row is not going to polish well but not sure about the others and I only see one that kind of maybe looks like the one Rob polished. Anyway, I intend to start face polishing these, or at least some of them and see how it goes. I will try to post closeups and the polished side as I go along. Rock 1 (left) in the top row is first. Let me know if you have one(s) that you would like to see done first. All 27 rocks Closeups of Rock 1 in top row. Dry Part of one side "polished" and wet. I stopped at 220 grit because I could tell this one was going nowhere fast. Not picking up these again (assuming I can tell it is like this one). Thanks for looking, Chris

I remember that YouTube Shorts from Rob, very impressive. I hope you could have some of your collections with a nice polished surface. I would be most interested in this one: I actually thought the one you picked (rock 1) was the most hopeful one...

You are very productive! I totally agree that it looks pretty nice. It is a pity that the scar area is still scar.

I like the second one-very cool pattern. Too bad it has the deep looking pits, or I'd be asking why you weren't cabbing it Patty

This is fun. It’s instant gratification where you do all the work and we just get to see the results. Nothing as good as the one in my video yet, but there’s still hope!
Did you go down that beach as far as the first house? I think that’s where the best ones are although I’ve only been there a couple times.

It does have a lot of pits. I may try some epoxy and see if it will hold together better. Even the lighter parts are kind of crumbly. This is fun. I think I did see some of the more solid ones when I got to that point. I should have kept pictures of which stone came from where but it was cold and windy that day and I tried to collect what I could as fast as I could.

I've had pretty good luck using a thinned epoxy.

What an interesting thread! I really like the dark ones and the contrast. I especially like the odd ball blackish spotted one. I'd like to see more of the dark ones.

Trying to play catch-up on the forum...
This is a cool idea for a thread Chris! I love seeing the "pre" and "post" pictures. I'm amazed at some of the outcomes versus what they look like in the "raw"!
That 2nd one on 4/29 is VERY interesting...with the possible "coal" in the piece!

Still no stunning examples, but the improvement is still amazing. Hopefully you hit the jackpot soon!

I don't know what I was thinking trying to do 26 rocks. I got three more done today and will post tonight if I have time. I am going to try to stabilize the best "coal" one and try to make a cab from it. Still no stunning examples, but the improvement is still amazing. Hopefully you hit the jackpot soon! Good one coming up soon.

I think those "coal" pieces are fascinating...but nothing beats those pieces with the hexagonal sections!
