I start a jewelry and metalcraft class at a nearby junior college tonight. I'm really looking forward to it. 14 sessions on Monday nights from 6-10.

Should be fun. Fabrication, wax carving, casting, copper, bronze, silver and gold. I think once we get going it will be largely self paced which is what I prefer. It's 3 different levels of class at the same time.

How many students are you going to be teaching? You funny! Actually though it's being taught by a woman that's a member of The Rock club that I recently joined. When she saw my pendant at the meeting I went to. She was trying to recruit me to teach a lesson.

I’m jealous! Sounds really fun. Actually kind of surprised too that those classes are offered at a local college. I assume it’s like what we call a community college. Don’t typically see those offerings. I look forward to seeing what all you learn to make.👍

khara, it's their "Lifelong Learning Summer Program" They're typically shorter classes that they bring someone in that's not really a teacher. There's several cooking classes and usually some art classes and some finance and computer offerings. I missed the Bahn mi and bao bun classes.

I took classes at Portland Community college when we lived there. It's nice for learning different techniques and having access to tools that you don't have now, a test drive so to speak.

I expect to see lots of great pieces from you! You'll do well, I'm sure. I do the same thing starting in June and then again in the fall. Never done it before. Mine is Hancock Community College and they have lots of offerings. I used to teach Citizenship there and enjoyed it very much. The jewelry class "sells out" real quick so i woke up early registration day.

mirkee glad you were able to get into your class and I hope it's a good one. I think we have kind of the opposite problem here. It seems like they were struggling to get enough enrollees to keep the classes open. It's probably because they offer at least 3 different classes. There's a couple in the afternoon and mine is at night.

mirkee That sounds awesome! Good luck to you. I hope you pick a bunch of skills and that you'll be showing off some of your creations here.

I just found out William Holland lapidary school has opened shorter weekend classes.
Learning from old masters of the lapidary arts before they are gone is important for the future I believe.

khara it will probably be a bit before I have anything to show. So far I made a ring out of 12 pieces of 1" silver wire bent into scroll shapes. You can actually arrange the scrolls in different ways and then solder them all together to make a ring. She wanted us to make the ring to fit us. Because I have Fred Flintstone fingers I could only come up with one arrangement that would fit me. So, I have a very feminine, dainty ring that will just fit on my pinky! I started working on a bezel setting for cabochon last week, but class is on Monday, next weeks a holiday.

rockbrain That’s actually pretty hilarious. I wonder if next time she’ll adjust her teaching a bit. Taking a look at the hands in the class and suggesting (12) 1 1/4” pieces maybe??

ThomasT I wish William Holland was on the opposite side of the country. Completely agree about picking these peoples brains before it’s too late.
