I got some new material recently I'm dying to get some cabs out of...so I had to clear these off dop! They've been waiting patiently for months...so I figured I oughta do something with them! LOL As always, thanks for taking a gander! Rutilated Quartz - nowhere near as awesome as gemfeller 's recent piece! These are the best pics I can get of the dang thing! LOL Pinolith This was sold as Ocean Jasper...but after discussion with rockjunquie , I think we think this is Orbicular River Jasper Bristlecone Pine Oolite - Thanks for the correct ID Tela! Chrysocolla, Malachite, Cuprite - the shapes got funky on these. First one broke...so had to reshape on the fly. Hate that! Wife likes 'em...so that's something! LOL Batcave Jasper - chunk I got off eBay awhile back...

Always a sucker for green and blue so Chrysocolla, Malachite, Cuprite ones look great! As well as the Rutilated Quartz. Back when I was in college I recall that rutilated quartz was popular and realatively easy to get. I am assuming it is harder to get like most everthing else?

Love the rutililated quartz!!! Super nice. Thanks Tela! You are ABSOLUTELY correct!! I changed the ID in the post! Thanks! * I was working a piece of Galaxy Rhyolite...and trashed it, because it looked like crap! I must've had that stuck in my head! LOL Always a sucker for green and blue so Chrysocolla, Malachite, Cuprite ones look great! As well as the Rutilated Quartz. Back when I was in college I recall that rutilated quartz was popular and realatively easy to get. I am assuming it is harder to get like most everthing else? Thanks Chris! Those are my wife favorites as well!! I have been on the lookout for Rutilated Quartz for quite awhile...and from what I've seen...or more to the point "not" seen, the quantity of decent pieces of rough are slim pickins! (Or at least at what I consider a decent price! )

Very nice as usual! I first thought my favorite was the bristlecone pine oolite. Then the Orbicular River Jaspers are pretty cool. Oh and this!

It's very hard to pick a favorite from these beauties. I'd pick them all. The rutilated quartz and bat cave are superb. Thanks for sharing.

Really nice batch Jason. Nice photography too. The rutilated quartz is my favorite but I'm partial to the stuff and always have been. Years ago it was abundant and cheap. But in the 90s top cutters' work was often featured in magazines and it became very popular among the many new lapidary people who hadn't previously been aware of its potential. Predictably, the supply of quality rough went down and the price went up.
It varies greatly in type and quality. Some, with tiny, thin rutile inclusions is called Angel's Hair Quartz and it has its own appeal. Some cutters prefer the rare "stars,' with rays of golden rutile growing star-like from a metallic inclusion. Some rutile is reddish, with a copper-like quality. Other occurs as what I call 'swords," broad rutile crystals with impressive "flash.' Anther variety is the sort you cut here. Sometimes the bundles of rutile are thick and bunched like my stone you refer to. It also occurs in a range of quartz colors, from water clear to fairly dark smoky. I have one large smoky piece that has amazing bright rutile inclusions but it will be a display piece only. Lots of cutting to do on it.
Really fine work, thanks for showing it.

Nice work! I'm picking the quartz with the orbicular jasper coming in at a close second... Thank you my friend! I really like that Orbicular Jasper too. Who cares if it's B-grade! LOL I like them all, especially the rutilated quartz and the pinoliths. Thanks for the eye candy! Thanks Pat! That Pinolith was a "gift" slab I got from one of my eBay purchases. Heck of a gift! It's very hard to pick a favorite from these beauties. I'd pick them all. The rutilated quartz and bat cave are superb. Thanks for sharing. Thanks Doug! That Batcave has been sitting there for months! It was a really thick piece...so it's got a decently high dome...comparatively speaking! LOL Thanks Chris! I mean theeeyank yeeeooo! LOL Very nice work! Especially love the Rutilated Quartz! Thank you very much! I thought I was done at one point...looked at it backlit...and could see some scratches in the backside! Wow! They were VERY evident due to how clear the quartz is! What you see in that piece now is actually "air bubbels"...but they have a linear pattern! I wish my camera was good enough to capture what I see when in hand! Really nice batch Jason. Nice photography too. Thank you SO much Rick! I seriously didn't know there were so many different types of Rutilated Quartz!! I will be "categorizing" every piece I see now! From what I'm seeing (where I'm looking) any piece of rough of any size large enough to slab, appears to be fractured pretty significantly. I picked up another piece recently...which has some "wider" Rutile. I'm going to have to study this piece pretty diligently to see if I can get a cut on it to capture the Rutile in the cab as best I can.

Jasoninsd, I was thinking about a cab for the small cab contest from rutilated quartz. What do you think?

Jasoninsd, I was thinking about a cab for the small cab contest from rutilated quartz. What do you think? Why not if you have a scrap piece already. In my head I'm always thinking "more is better" when it comes to seeing Rutile in Quartz. However, the piece Rick did was smaller than mine...and a heck of a lot more brilliant! I was looking through my trim scraps to see if I had anything I could use. I found some small pieces of Needles Blue I'm considering...

Every one those are amazing! Very nice work! Thanks Quentin! I'm really hoping the ones I have up next are going to turn out like I think they should! LOL They're all very nice, and the bristlecone pine oolite really catches my eye. Thanks Randy! That one was really surprising to me! I was thinking it was going to be just a matte finish on that one...but it actually polished up very nicely!
