I discovered this forum when searching for images of Howardite which lead to an old forum post about Howardite. I found a piece of Howardite in my collection that doesn't look like photos I've seen elsewhere. Can anyone tell me anything more about this piece. This is a question to satisfy my curiosity. Any input is welcome and thanks in advance!

Its howardite. Thing you have to remember with all material, not all the material out of a deposit is going to all look exactly the same. Just shares the same characteristics. With most material, you have the top tier primo stuff, mid tier, and bottom of the barrel with a lil of everything mixed in between. Hell.. sometimes you can get material that looks completely different right out of the same deposit. Dunno if that answers your question or is helpful. But yeah… don’t expect everything to look the same I guess is what I’m saying

That's the new dig Howardite which has a lot more looks than the original which has a distinctive rattlesnake skin pattern. The old stock is hard to find expensive and fractures easily. The new dig is easier to work.

I feel like you're kindly walking a kindergartner to their first day of school. So thank you. I suppose I should have been a little more specific with my question. The post I read in the past was about the good old days of Howardite and the members who had made cabochons from some of that old stuff posted pictures and I was like, "Bloody Hell!" That was some jaw dropping work for sure! I guess I'm more wondering if this leans towards the older stuff, or is this more of the newer variety. As I mentioned before, this collection is from a 90 something year old man, spanning decades. Its been serious fun and serious homework for the last year now, and I haven't even gone through half of it.

Yours is definitely new. This is an original Howardite cab made by Silverhawk who had a connect to the material. I contacted his wife and wanted to buy some slabs. I ran into her at a Reno lapidary show and the price had gone up 1000%. There can be very little usable material from the rough, so that is why I wanted slabs. I buy both the old and new material. This year I was able to get a single cab slab of the original that was sold as the new and made this:

Stan Wall was also selling the stuff you have as Royal Flamingo, it is actually one ridge away from the old Howardite dig.

So very helpful! And so pretty, hard to believe those are rocks! Been meaning to tell you. If you want to make sure someone reads your reply to them (in this case stardiamond), you should "tag" them. If you hover your cursor over their name, there will be a little pop-up that shows their actual username. Most of the time it's exactly what you see...but every once in awhile the person's user name is different than their screen name. Anyway...in order to tag someone, put a @ symbol before their username. So if I want to tag you, I put a @ before tribeunited and after you post your reply it'll show up in yellow like this tribeunited . That way you know you tagged them...and they'll get a notification that you tagged them... ...or you can quote them like you have been doing sometimes. That also gives them a notification that you were interacting with something they said.

The Howardite story is that is sillicated opalized chert and was found by a guy named Howard and the location was secret. This is a Royal Flamingo slab which is similar but no rattlesnake pattern.
