I've got a lot of preforms of nice material that I want some input on. I keep going back and forth on this one, so I ask for any input whatsoever. My question is this. Would a person who cabs be interested in an assorted lot like the photo posted, or would creating a set of the same type be more appealing? What would a fair price for a set be? My thoughts are that the assortment would be great for someone who doesn't want to buy 10 different slabs, doesn't own the equipment to cut them down to a workable size, or doesn't have big money to sink into a hobby. My other through was that artists may have a preferred medium and would rather have a set of one material, such as all agates, or all jaspers, etc. Please keep in mind that these aren't scrap/leftover pieces. They seem to be the best pieces of the slabs, ready to work into something pretty. I'm adding one more picture as a size indicator. Again, any and all input is welcome. I look forward to your responses! As always, thank you all so much!

I’d prefer an assortment.

I’d prefer an assortment. I was leaning that way as well. Would a $30 plus shipping or a $40 free ship price be too high?

Neither a cabber nor an artist (yet), but I prefer assortment.

I know nothing about shipping or pricing. However, I wouldn’t pay $30 plus shipping. They are nice preforms, but not outstanding.

I couldn't comment on price without knowing how many you would have in an assortment.
I just ran across your eBay ads. It would probably have been prudent to mention that you are researching your eBay sales here. Not that there's anything really wrong with that, but there are other sellers here who may not want to help the competition. Just my 2 cents.

I'm also in the "assortment" camp...unless it's a "high-end" group of preforms...then it's nice to have an all-the-same listing. To answer your question about price. I probably wouldn't go for a $4 a preform price...but I'm frugal...you can probably read that as "cheap"! LOL - That being said, I've been willing to pay top dollar for high-end product. In the group of preforms you have pictured, there aren't any real standouts (to me) - they're pretty "common" products. I might consider a $25 price which included shipping. (Obviously a pricier product warrants a higher pricing for the group...) That's just my opinion...

Sorry, I didn't think it was right to say Ebay since that would be advertising, and I wasn't trying to do that here. I mentioned I would sell all of it somewhere, so sorry! I also made sure not to list anything there that I talked about here, as I didn't think that was right either. I can stop posting on this site, my apologies.

Yes, I was thinking the same 10 or 20 piece lots, priced as you mentioned @$2 each plus ship.... in my opinion the reason why I've got a bunch of finished and then preforms is that he cabbed the ones that excited him most.

Yep...that's kind of what I was thinking about them being "leftovers"... Not in a bad way...just can't expect top-dollar

I intend to sell them to give some back to the couple while they are still around. There biggest worry is that someone would throw them away when they were gone since they didn't have a person interested in inheriting it. I will post for ID and not ask about anything non-related to what it is.

Preform assortments are desirable, the only problem I see is that you don't get to choose the shape you're going to make. OTOH, you can get a bunch of different types of material in a lot & that's a great thing.

rockjunkie - understood. Thanks for pointing that out before I made some really nice people angry! Also the identifying and pointing out the good ones would be super helpful but almost too much to ask. liveoak very interesting point about not choosing shape. Since there are also an assortment of shapes, it might be good to include a variety of shapes in the mix. Thanks!

Definitely assortment. Value though will depend on various things such as size, thickness, number of pieces in a lot, and most important ID. Most people what to know what they have since customers often want to know what the stone is they are buying. And different stones can bring very different prices.
