I've got a few possibilities I'm looking at for dendritic. I'd like to do some Cheetah. It's not the conventional shaped dendrites but I think that' what the black spots are considered. I'm curious if others thinks that would "qualify". Post the material. You got me curious

Are doublets constructed from a flat shaped slice that is reshaped and then capped to get the dome a valid entry? Shown is a picture of the flat slice and the cap I made for this Woodward Plume.

I would say no because the rules call for " Contestants are asked to create a cabochon of any size, shape, or color from an all-natural dendritic material" For me the all-natural part would rule out using glue. But, it's up to the voters/judges and the rules haven't seemed to matter that much.

I would argue that if you reversed it, and did a doublet using a different color backing, yet cut the stone itself that was “all dendritic material” that should be good to go. Then again as you addressed, all natural would from a technical standpoint would be nothing but the stone in all its glory.

realrockhound this is the material I was talking about. I usually think of dendrites as the little fern looking marks, and I have seen them defined that way but I've also seen descriptions for Cheetah that refers to the marks as dendrites.

Interesting. Never seen that stuff before. Reminds me of a more colorful Montana. Those look like dendrites to me.

In the past, I believe it was up to whoever chose the theme to say yeah or nay. I can't keep up with who chose what, so whoever chose this month can chime in on the answer.

I thought it was pretty common but I just read that it's pretty rare and that it was just discovered in 1995. It's found in Brazil in seams and is basically a by product of apatite mining.

The spirit of the "all natural" stipulation was to exclude man made dendritic material. The question of doublets never came up so let's let roQhound make the final call.

Thanks for the information. The reason I asked is because some Woodward and Marfa Bouquet plume must be cut thin to show the pattern and could never be used for a future contest without capping or prior approval.

Personally, I think that while it's reasonable to regard a cap or doublet as an enhancement, it is the stone and not the glue that does the enhancing. It is no different than a stabilized slab, when done well a person could easily purchase a slab with potential fractures or porosity sealed, cut a cab from it, and never even know it was stabilized. I think we already had a "well, I don't do it this way, therefore no one should" situation from an individual not so long ago, one that almost permanently drove a fairly new member away from entering the contest. We need to keep this newby friendly and educational. When I have the time, most of my entries are me trying something new, and they usually just get one or 2 votes, which doesn't bother me at all since I see it more as fun than competition. If we bog it down with rules that kinda turns it into a stuffy contest with 3 or 4 entrants and a dozen or less votes until it dies, then who wins?

I don't even know why there's a fuss, really. We've had people entering capped or backed cabs before. Right? I bet the rules said something about natural stone.

Guess my main concern is that we have participation. We could have a separate fun competition for assembled cabs, and another for carving, and so on, but then it pulls from this. If an entry strays from the theme totally, it probably won't get any votes anyway, so the more competitive among us 😁 have no worries.

And for clarification, the person who I mentioned from an earlier post took their posts and left quite some time ago, not anyone here now.
