Looking for tips on this,, I made it last night. I took it all the way through my cerium oxide wheel and it looked cloudy so I went back to my last wheel which I believe is a 3000 grit soft wheel and it looked better. I think it should have a nicer shine- any suggestions? Thanks.

I’ve never cut it, so I wouldn’t know what compounds to use to polish it. On a side note.. I hope someone didn’t sell that to you under the pretense Thant it’s velvet obsidian.

That would explain why it was soft. I suck at IDs and I had some labradorite a while back but thought I had cabbed it all.
Now I need to dig around and find my obsidian!
Thanks!

Its happens. I can see why you grab a piece and from glance think it’s velvet. I was just more concerned someone sold it to you saying it was velvet. Wouldn’t be the first time a vendor/person pulled some crap like that. But on the bright side… now you can stop pulling your hair out trying to get the glass polish 😂

Good point, it's pretty good for labradorite! I still wonder why it looked worse off of the cerium wheel, however.

No clue. Maybe that stuff works better with a diamond paste? Hopefully someone will chime in on that.

Looks great 👍🏻. I’m no expert but if you think about it like fiberglass, all the fiber that seem to be in the stone or layers the angle of cut and polish also hardness play the biggest part of it turning out great. That’s my take on it. I think you did a great job I would be proud of what you did there you should set it in silver and give yourself a pat on the back and do another. Thx for sharing

Labradorite is not fibrous. It has a "lamellar" structure — fine, thin layers of material that are not uniform throughout. Here's a description:
"The cause of this optical phenomenon is lamellar structure caused by an exsolution process due to a miscibility gap. The effect is visible when the lamellar separation is between 128 and 252 nm. The lamellae are not necessarily parallel, and the lamellar structure is found to lack long range order (Bolton et al.,1966). Results of a modern electron diffraction study were published by Götz et al. (2022)."

I have an acquaintance who cuts a lot of this and similar stones. I believe he uses chrome oxide as a polish (yeah, the green stuff). I didn't get a chance to try it yet so can't personally confirm but would like to try.
