I had a chip if Sodalite left lying on my workbench so I thought I should try to do something with it. It turned out much better than I thought. It's not the flashiest piece out there but I love how the shape turned out on this high dome cab. I think the next chip I find will try to use the Dremel to make a concave cab. - Rob

I need to set up a proper photo area. These cell phone photos suck the life out of the rock. This doesn't do the cab any justice. Time to haul out the ol' Canon camera.

Try a neutral background, too.

Any modern phone should do fine. I think better light and a better focus on the surface of the cab, and don't use that cloudinary (if you stick to their default settings) shall do the trick.

Heheh, as a resident of the Pacific Northwest. The sun can be somewhat fleeting, even in June. Light is one of the things that really will make or break pics like this. I'm hoping I can make a macro-ish picture without the macro lens. I do have a 50mm prime that does stunning photos with small amounts of light but not sure how close to the rock I can get without it. My plan is to whip up a wooden box (light and neutral coloring) and use my offset flash to bounce the light where it needs to go. It will take some experimentation but I'll post the results once I get done with the setup. Lord knows I have more than enough scrap lumber in my garage. Maybe a nice raw cedar look...

A new addition to the cabochon family. I think this makes 12 cabs that I've made and that picture jasper (I think) is my current favorite. I'm beginning to really like this partial dome/facet treatment on these angular pieces. This one was from a bargain bin "fill a bag for $5" one of about 13 other fun rocks to cab that I'm looking forward to.

One of the original members of RTH used to make a lot of those faceted cabs. His name was John (he has since passed). The cut was dubbed the "cabojohn".
You did a great job on that cabojohn.

I realize the smoothing algorithm in the phone software can mess up rocks This is so true. Phone cameras are optimised for taking nice photos of faces. I've noticed my phone camera (from Korea) is quite racist and automatically shifts the white balance to whiten certain colours, stemming from this horrible idea that paler skin is ideal (mind you, us Australians should stop liking tans and embrace the pale so we stop getting melanomas). I mostly notice it when I try to photo sunsets. It blows out any oranges and yellows. The only way I've been able to fix it is to going into manual mode and adjusting the colour balance, but then that usually throws the other colours. It's something to be aware of with phones. The cameras in them are amazing but were developed with selfies, not rocks, in mind.

The work is lovely, great job! I don't know if this tip is helpful, but here' my unasked for .02 cents... I use something like this, it was around $30 6 months ago. The LED feature on it doesn't work for shiny rocks (can see the ring in the reflection), so instead I use an overhead lamp above the hole. Then just the camera on my phone without a flash. My pictures aren't great, but they are getting better! I hope this tip is helpful!

I actually have a studio light set from my more shutterbuggy days but it's awkwardly huge and is massive overkill for a tiny little cabochon. This box looks pretty nice though, I wonder if you put the cab on a neutral like grey velour or tan...

Those colors on the bottom all come with the box and it folds up and comes with a bag. I'm not selling these though, just giving you an honest opinion. It took me forever to try and figure out how everyone else was getting great photos, so I thought if I shared this maybe it would save you some headache.

rocknrob Bargain bin “fill a bag for 5 bucks”… I got one of those too just a couple weeks ago! Same show? And to confess, I filled more than one bag! 😳 I like that angular cab.👍
