Here are two slabs I cut yesterday from a 10 pound chunk of amethyst. I knew there were some chevron patterns when I bought the rock. Wasn't sure how well I would hit them and what they would look like. Hopefully there will be some more/bigger ones as I get into the rock.    Thanks for taking a look. Chris |

The color is really impressive. Something I have noticed about amethyst slabs is they tend to be heavily fractured. Is there a reason for this?

Fingers crossed a few more chevrons will peek through as you go deeper with the cuts! I am hoping! The color is really impressive. Something I have noticed about amethyst slabs is they tend to be heavily fractured. Is there a reason for this? It does appear to be fractured but not sure it is much more than typical white or clear quartz. I stabilized the rock before I started cutting. I put a little piece in the Lot-O and part of it broke. I was thinking the other day that part of the issue might be the crystal planes. May be especially true with the chevrons that are in this one. |

You did an incredible job with the stabilization by the way. Could be the environment bigger chunks of amethyst are formed in. One think I noticed from cutting geodes, even in the slight form, amethyst adds a special "something" to any formation. |

The crystal planes do cause problems. From a flint knapping perspective I find that
quartz is brittle and can fracture very easily. Waiting to see some pretty cabs.
