Here are two slabs I cut yesterday from a 10 pound chunk of amethyst. I knew there were some chevron patterns when I bought the rock. Wasn't sure how well I would hit them and what they would look like. Hopefully there will be some more/bigger ones as I get into the rock. Thanks for taking a look. Chris

Fingers crossed a few more chevrons will peek through as you go deeper with the cuts!

The color is really impressive. Something I have noticed about amethyst slabs is they tend to be heavily fractured. Is there a reason for this?

Something I have noticed about amethyst slabs is they tend to be heavily fractured. Is there a reason for this? It does appear to be fractured but not sure it is much more than typical white or clear quartz. I stabilized the rock before I started cutting. I put a little piece in the Lot-O and part of it broke. I was thinking the other day that part of the issue might be the crystal planes. May be especially true with the chevrons that are in this one.

You did an incredible job with the stabilization by the way. Could be the environment bigger chunks of amethyst are formed in. One think I noticed from cutting geodes, even in the slight form, amethyst adds a special "something" to any formation.

The crystal planes do cause problems. From a flint knapping perspective I find that quartz is brittle and can fracture very easily. Waiting to see some pretty cabs.
