Hello, I am looking at buying a star diamond gp8 (gsp8?) It has from left to right: an end plate, expandable drum, two 8" grinding wheels, and another endplate.
Looks to be in good condition and the price is right, around $350.
Seller says he has a motor to go with it...the picture he sent is of a very large old motor with capacitor start but 1/6 hp.
That seems real under powered to me. I plan to mount an 8x3 sintered wheel on this machine and it weighs over 17lb.
Just trying to guage whether the capacitor start motor reduces the need for higher hp rating.
The wheel is currently (barely) on a raytech 2 wheel arbor using a 1/3 hp non capacitor start motor. I'm worried about burning that motor up.
Kingsley north sounded really surprised that the 1/3 hp motor works at all, they recommended i use at least 3/4 hp motor possibly even 1hp.
What do yall say? Does capacitor start reduce the need for higher hp?

With the two SC wheels (which aren't light), two 8x3" expanding drums and the two end plate discs that those machines originally came with new, they used to use a 1/3hp motor.
But with the weight of a 3x8" sintered wheel you'll probably want to move up to a 1/2hp which is what I use on my old Highland Park machine with two 1.5x8" steel core Han's sintered wheels, plus one aluminum core Inland sintered, one Crystalite Crystalring wheel and two NOVA wheels. IMO 3/4hp would not be necessary as long as everything is well balanced and running true.

Thanks for the reply, kinda what I was thinking. I figure if my 14" slab saw runs large rocks with 1/2 hp then a grinder running big sintered wheel (actually one 8x3 and another 8x2) should be fine. The expandable drum weight is minimal. I guess it also depends what is available locally,,,if I can only get a 3/4 hp I'd probably go with that, id suppose it wouldn't add too much the electric bill.
Once I get the machine (tomorrow) ill assess whether or not there is space to add another 8" hex wheel (thinking 60 or 80 grit).
I'm stoked to have found this one in state (only 8 hr round trip lol).
This should allow me to donate my 2 wheel 8" arbor to my gem and mineral society, hoping to get a club workshop going for folks not looking to invest tons of money!
Thanks for the reply!
