I got this slab material from realrockhound. Thanks much. It looked pretty dark until I started polishing it and then it came alive. They are hard to see in the photos, but I like the tiny red/orange dots in the middle band. Hope you enjoy the pics (before and after). Chris

Gore-juss Chris!!!
You're one of a handful of people to have worked it...at least in the last 50 years! LOL
I still have some slabs of this as well. I'll break out a few more cabs one of these days!

Dont worry... I gave him a nice big slab and will happily send more of different pattens if he wants. I believe khara snagged the slab I put in the traveling box. So hoping this thread will show how nice it works up. Not to hijack this thread or Chris's craftsmanship, just want to share a couple I cut to show the variety in the material, as I have never really posted any. chris1956 the polish you got on that is freaking amazing. Makes my cabs pale in comparison. Definitely excited to see the rest of what you cut up from that slab. There was a fracture in the circle and the edge chipped off during polish.

Thanks realrockhound. I forgot to mention before that I used a 14K and 50K wheels, no powder polish. I typically don't use powder and with the small holes I was afraid it could stick in there and ruin it or take more work to get it out.

I find the names of material interesting. Chinese? It resembles Haystack Butte aka Jellybean. Haystack Butte is in Montana and the jasper is from Oregon. Some of the Jellybean has the colors or a jar of jellybeans, most is just chocolate.

Coats he was coming home with truck loads from what my dad told me. To my dads recollection, it was at the point in time they were cutting roads out near China hat. Hence the name, Chinese jasper. Haystack jasper comes from out near haystack reservoir near prineville.

Thanks for the explanation. Good haystack is a tough find and the material has pits, vugs and fractures. This was the best material I found:

Beautiful material and excellent cabs. These cabs have Chinese national flag colors (or the colors of a common Chinese dish "stir-fried tomato and scrambled eggs") so the name sounds quite spot-on to me

There is another small piece that I will polish shortly but probably doesn't have the colors this one has. Wow, nice one Chris! Thanks for the before and after. Very nice jasper. Thanks for sharing. Thanks. Didn't think it would turn out the way it did when I started grinding and polishing.

Nice cabs Chris. 👍 And thanks for the info on the 14k and 50k wheels. I have them on my wish list. I’m actually considering a spin on end lap so I don’t have to change out wheels and don’t have a 2nd arbor, yet. Hopefully working it on the side will be doable enough. Nice cabs too realrockhound 👍 And yes, I did snag the slab out of the traveling box. I’m “saving” it for a little while yet. I still sometimes cut cabs I’m not happy with so am waiting for a bit more consistency before I cut into the one slab I have of this.🤓

I put my 80 and 220 metal wheels on a second arbor I bought and the rest on the Kingsley North cabber. Works really well but takes up space. Luckily I have space. I have them at a 90 degree angle so I can just spin in the chair from 80/220 to the other cabber.
