Hello! I feel inspired to take on a rock tumbling project as something to do with my granddaughter Alana, age 15+. I picked up a Chicago Electric 2-barrel tumbler on clearance from Harbor Freight, a set of dragon blood rocks from rocktumbler.com, and most of the other necessaries from Amazon. I hope to get well through this first tumbling project before she gets busy in one month with her junior year of high school. As an old dog learning new tricks, I have no illusions that this won’t be harder than it looks. Partly I want to create some fun memories with Alana, and partly I want to judge whether I want this to be not just a project, but a hobby. Wish me luck. I’ll gladly accept ideas and encouragement, if you have any to spare. That’s why I joined this forum.

Thanks to all of you who welcomed me into the forum back in June. This is to just report that Alana's and my first project was a success. The photo I'm uploading shows about a quarter of the dragon blood rocks that I tumbled. What I find magical is that someone with as little experience as I have can tumble hard, rough, dull-colored rocks and end up with something with such rich color and shiney surfaces. Pardon me for speaking the obvious, but I'm sort of star-struck by this.

timjb - I'm sorry I missed seeing your intro back in June! Darnit! Welcome to the forum from South Dakota! I'm stoked you were doing this project with your granddaughter! I'm also hoping the bug bit you as there's so many more rocks out there to make shiny!

Welcome form Washington state. I would say the dragon's blood tumble was a success.
