Here's a question about ID clarification. I have this type of material with two names. This one was labeled Mimbres. I also have this material labeled "Apache Rhyolite" and "Apache Dendritic." At this point I believe that Apache Rhyolite is found in Mimbres or Mimbres Valley. My question is, Are they the same material, like alias for the same name, or is this something different? (like how owyhee has different names for materials depending on the look or locale or whatnot)

Will you hate me if I told you it doesn't look like either or?? LOL! I could be all wrong, but I have some very similar stuff without a name but dendrite-y with the same colors.

You know what??? I think you're right! I think this is more of that nature's paintbrush. I can't find that one online anywhere, but I posted a pale colored one, and he's got another one this color. I believe if I dig it out again it might even be from the same slab....
Now I wonder if it is a very old timey Mimbres valley material.... keep in mind he's been hounding since the 60's at least, and he's from a hounding family - his father also hounded. I've found articles online mentioning his father in the 1890s...
It could also have been just put with the Mimbres stuff on accident. There was very little bagged, but this one was with others labeled mimbres valley. No label or writing on this piece, just in the same bag.
So, I think it is chaulky dry. It looks very much like a dry clay pot. Let me see if I can scrounge up that other paintbrush one. It might be time to reorganize, it's getting a bit out of hand now. LOL

ok Now I'm an idiot asking for help on something I have more of. Sorry! Yes, natures paintbrush. My note card on this says possible chinese rhyolite. At least the past me was smart enough to write something. lOl this one looked at it and said Mimbres, hmmm... I don't know. Better ask.

Rhyolite and even limestone are often called by merchants Jasper. Even when it's not a jasper. My notes said possible chinese rhyolite because though I found "paintbrush jasper" limestone, I couldn't find "Nature's Paintbrush Jasper."
I put rhyolite in my notes because it didn't have the smooth feel of a jasper, but it was similar enough to the chinese limestone called paintbrush that I just wrote that down with question marks on the card. Meaning at some point I would figure out if this was the same and if it was a rhyolite.
My notes are just things I wrote down when I originally searched for more info on the material. I don't know why I look up things that are already labeled, I suppose I just want to know more.
So, now I will add to the note possible chinese limestone too.
Did that make sense? I guess I should have said that my notes had question marks... possible china?possible rhyolite?? Rhyolite based only on "notajasper" jaspers. lol
Now even I'm confused.

Makes sense! I have a ton of rhyolite on my property but never seen limestone here yet. The way you described the look and feel of the stone matched my memories of limestones, but not rhyolite… but my rhyolite is different from what you can find elsewhere, sooooo… yeah, was just wondering what made you consider rhyolite lol. Confusing myself too

Chinese paintbrush is also called nature's paintbrush. It isn't actually Chinese. I forget the state- but, I believe it was found in a place nearby called China. I could be wrong on that, it's been awhile since I looked it up. It's one of my favorite picture stones.

Thank you for that! Guess my search was leading to the wrong rocks, then. I’ve heard of Chinese writing stone, but it’s my first time hearing of Chinese/natures paintbrush.

I haven't seen that color, but some old stock might have it. I have a piece that has a little of a red hue.
And here's another just because. Love this stuff.

It's been really hard for me to find cabs like that. I didn't cut any of them, but I had the sense to grab them when I saw them. They are pretty hard to come by.

I love it. The way you matched the colors with the beads is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing it. This was my first time seeing it made into jewelry so I'm super impressed.

I was just looking online and find that there is a stone being called Chinese paintbrush that is from China, but it's not the same stuff. I have had some before and now I can't find it. There is also Chohua jasper which IS from China. ETA: Chohua is being called Chinese Painting Jasper.
