Okay, that article went from informative to downright loony pretty rapidly. It starts by stating, accurately, that up and down are merely references and meaningless in most of space, and eventually spins that on it's head to say that there are racist roots to choosing compass north as the standardized top of maps. I mean, it seems balanced and presenting all views, but to infer any hint of reality to that view is a bit vapid. The discovery of lodestone and subsequent invention of the compass necessitates it. Which way does the charged end of a compass needle point? There's your simple explanation of why. Charts before compasses were based on star constellations, and if I am correct probably oriented off of the North Star and the southern cross, relative to the hemisphere you were traveling in. I'm on vacation, so not going to look it up, but it seems logical.

Perfect example of critical race theory in action. North and south are a social construct! Bigot 😂

You're all wrong. Those of us who are truly enlightened know that the earth is actually flat and maps should accommodate our views.

You're all wrong. Those of us who are truly enlightened know that the earth is actually flat and maps should accommodate our views. But... nearly every direction I seem to go on my property is either uphill or downhill...

In 1459 a Venetian monk named Fra Mauro completed an astonishing map of the world. Seven feet in diameter, Fra Mauro's mappamundi is the oldest and most complete Medieval map to survive into modernity. And in its time, this groundbreaking mappamundi provided the most detailed description of the known world, incorporating accurate observation, and geographic reality, urging viewers to see water and land as they really existed. Fra Mauro's map was the first in history to show that a ship could circumnavigate Africa, and that the Indian "Sea" was in fact an ocean, enabling international trade to expand across the globe. Acclaimed anthropologist Meredith F. Small reveals how Fra Mauro's mappamundi made cartography into a science rather than a practice based on religion and ancient myths.
Standing there for quite a while, trying to get my worldly bearings by looking for the distinctive boot of Italy, I finally realized this map was drawn upside down. Much later, I would discover that the orientation of Fra Mauro’s map was intentional, announcing that it was different from previous western world maps. They were oriented toward the east, with Jerusalem in the center, to promote Christianity, but the creator of this map was a new breed of cartographer. He wanted to follow the dictates of science, not religion, and so he spun his world in a different direction.
Here Begins the Dark Sea - Venice, a Medieval Monk, and the Creation of the Most Accurate Map of the World

Always loved maps since I was kid... I believe paper maps are very valuable, especially if you can't memorize them.
I would like to have one of these upside-down global maps...

To quote the Gen Alpha young'ns, this has me pretty triggered right now. I'll have you know we get around the toilet issue by not using toilets. We're that superior we don't need them. And we pronounce "z" properly too

titaniumkid I realize this upside-down map thing could be a shock to those down under...try to stay calm... just hang on and have another vegemite sandwich... Felt like I've been holding on for dear life my entire existence. Now I know why. I'm gonna make a petition at change.org: Flip the Map Up the Right Way Reasons: 1. The bottom of mainland Aus might look like a butt, but that doesn't mean it should be at the bottom. 2. Dirt is heavier than water, so the dirt-heavy hemisphere (the north) should be at the bottom of the world. 3. England should be the butt of all jokes (no offence to the English... but there's a deep-seated historical resentment leading to this). Thus, it makes sense it should be at the butt of the world map, namely, the geographical south pole should be at Morton, Derbyshire, England. Time for vegemite on toast while I come up with more reasons.

titaniumkid I believe your reason #2 is legitimate... "2. Dirt is heavier than water, so the dirt-heavy hemisphere (the north) should be at the bottom of the world." Rock is surely heavier than water... and there is more dry land above water in the "Northern Hemisphere"... so as all things go, the heavier end of the world would naturally go towards the bottom. However, you may need to get royal consent to officially adopt the new upside-down map. Something to ponder upon for all us peons.
