Cool looking specimens. Wish I could help with your questions, but those are above my pay grade.

Thanks for all the intriguing photos! Iron is an interesting subject. When it starts forming in stars, it is the Death knell because it takes more energy to form than it produces, so the star will soon collapse. Earth's mantle contains a lot of iron, but somehow the continents have been depleted of it (they don't know how) and that is why continents float. Most meteorites are irons, earth gets over 100 tons of fresh new space dust every day! Meteorites don't "burn up" and disappear, they oxidase into magnetite - and fall to earth as black sand! Iron exists in a range of oxidation states from -2 to +7; however, on Earth it is predominantly in its +2 or +3 redox state and is a primary redox-active metal on Earth. The cycling of iron between its +2 and +3 oxidation states is referred to as the iron cycle. Dissolved by water, iron becomes yellow limonite, which dries to become red hematite, further drying it changes to goethite. Magnetite changing to goethite it provides many colors to the rocks it invades. I live in an iron rich area and have studied it.

These would be called assuming the streak is brown. Limonite Psuedomorphs after Marcasite #1 and the images in 1dave post you can see the are psuedomorphs after pyrite they still have the isometric crystal structures (cube and octohedron). the specimen above #14 show cockscomb pyrite psuedomorph

So far it's been fairly straight forward process. Just need a turntable, degaussing rod, some chicken wire and a gallon of 40 weight oil.
