I used a winch once to pull a 200 lb piece of agate up a 80 foot cliff face one ๐ Man, all engineers think alike. Last fall, I used my tractor, chains, rope, and towing straps to drag a 500 pound piece of quartzite out of a 40 foot deep gulley. If I had a winch, I would have tried that first.

I knew he was going back to hound the area and told him to take a pic so I could see. I went up mid way through the week and found the piece. Literally impossible to get out from below. So I got my equipment and went to the top. Crawled down through a shoot on the cliff face and hooked it up, went back up top and winched it to the top. Loaded it in the atv and left ๐. He went back and was like wtf.. someone took it. About a month later I dropped it in his yard as a gift lol. He was so confused until I told him it was me.

Those guys made it look easy. They have the equipment and know how to use it for sure.
The winches on my trucks are used to pull logs or whatnot uphill or get somebody unstuck in the rainy season sometimes.
When a young man, for me it was hours by hand using only muscle power with cable pullers and come alongs... and sweat.
No more hand winching these days.
