The first piece, which looks like a sandstone to me, are the patterns only on the surface just like a two dimensional "print"? The patterns aren't interesting enough anyway, probably not worth slabbing to check further.

For lack of better words, yes, #1 is basically a dud. If you tried to cab it etc.. you’d lose the dendrites and color. I have a lot of that stuff laying around the property

Does make me wonder why he bought it, though… any idea what it’s a dud of? what it is, is either a limestone or a sandstone. Generally, there might have been a face to that piece that had a crack all the way across the face, manganese goes through that crack and makes the dendrites. But they are only face value and don’t go into the stone. Sometimes you can get some pretty cool ones that are just a neat piece to have. Nothing you can do with them other that admire the features that grew on the rock.

Ok, so it’s not that it’s a dud of a specific type of picture “jasper”,… it’s just a different type of picture stone? I have been working under the assumption that all of my searches should start with “jasper” lol
Edit: realized why I assumed this limestone would be called “jasper”… had previously run across Chinese picture jasper and got it into my head that dendritic limestone will be called jasper, too 😓

I agree Chinese picture stone shouldn't be called jasper. A more accurate name I see recently is Chinese Dendritic Limestone.

I wouldn’t even call it a picture stone. Just a dendritic sandstone etc…

There is a lot of material out there in general that I personally wouldn’t even call true dendritic material. Only reason it gets called that is because the formations look like your traditional black dendrites which are manganese. But I’m overly critical so what the hell fo I know 😂

I agree it is probably sandstone or limestone. I pick up a lot of creek and beach rocks that I don't know if they will polish or not but look interesting. Before I slab it, I try polishing a spot that I can get to on the wheels to make sure it will polish well. Then decide depending on how well or not it polished.

For actual picture jasper and “jasper”, are the typical scenes (what I see in books and online) just straight across cuts, or will they need fancy angles to recognize them?
