A few from today. Amethyst cab. Lots of fractures. Fossil from southwest Micigan, Lake Micigian. I didn't take a before picture but here is a picture of s similar whole stone as they look dry on the beach. Looks like script stone dry but as soon as it hit the oil in the saw it soaked it up and turned dark. The white you see in the final cab are small shells which have an iridescence to them but didn't show up on the photos. Petoskey stone for good measure. Not a full stone but detail is pretty nice. Working on: Rocky Butte Picture Jasper from realrockhound. This was a piece that was left over after I cut two off of the slab. Didn't have much pattern but I figured it would be a good one to practice on. Going to be hard to dome. On 220 at the moment. Thanks for taking a look. Chris

Those are all beautiful! Could you give a quick rundown of your process? What grits and polishes you use?

Those are all beautiful! Could you give a quick rundown of your process? What grits and polishes you use? Thanks. When I first started polishing rocks it was mostly Petoskey stones. I didn't have luck with fine polishes (didn't have an ultrasonic cleaner at the time) after grinding because of all the small holes typically in the stones. So in additoin to the six wheel Kingsley North cabber I got a second two wheel arbor. I put 80 and 220 metal wheels on the two wheel arbor and then put 280, 600, 1200, 3000, 14000, and 50000 on the Kingsley North. The 14K and 50K wheels allow me to skip the polish and not worry about removing it afterwards if it gets stuck in holes or cracks. I typically use the 14K and 50K but there are stones that you can't really tell much difference with them. I started the picture jasper on 80 grit but that was probably a mistake. It was delicate enough that it chipped the edges a little. I will probably start with 220 grit wheel on the next ones.

Chris, I love 'em! I find a lot of similar "clam shell" type fossils out here. I haven't worked many of them though. They remind me of Crinoidal Limestone. (Same basic principle.) That's my favorite of the batch...

That's my favorite of the batch... I forgot to add that the small shells fluoresce brightly under UV light. I found these on the same beaches where the lightning stones (septarians) are found. I will see if I can get a picture of that tomorrow.
